How long will mushroom spore syringes remain viable?
Q: |
I bought some spores from a supplier a while back, and am just getting around to trying to grow them. Are they still okay? I haven't opened the seal on the syringes, and have kept them in the box. Do they, shall we say, "expire" or are they still good after about 6 weeks? |

Spore syringes should stay viable for at least a few months. I believe at one point there was a 3 month guarantee on some of the syringes that were being sold, so that is probably a good basic estimate.
Storage methods can make a big difference in how long they last...keep them cool (not frozen), sealed, and dry. Some people have reported spore syringes that were still viable after nearly a year. Dry spore prints will last somewhat longer than spore syringes. Over time, contamination levels rise and germination rates drop.
