Can codeine phosphate be injected into the vein (IV)?
Q: I've seen the codes IV, IM, SC next to codeine phosphate liturature. Does that mean they can be injected into the vein? The same lit. only mentions IM & SC.
A: A codeine phosphate preparation can be injected IV (intravenously), however only if it is prepared for that method of use. An oral tablet should never be used to prepare an IV or SC (subcutaneously--under the skin) solution. These preparations are made under stringent methods using sterile, filtered (<1 micron) water using USP (pharmaceutically pure) product. One should not attempt to prepare such a solution without proper training or equipment, else you risk various infections, toxic shock syndrome, irritation, swelling, and so forth.
