What neurotransmitter does cocaine work on?
Q: I'd like to know what neurotransmitter in the brain cocaine acts upon.
A: Cocaine blocks the re-uptake of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. This causes a buildup of these neurotransmitters, as they remain in the synapse after the nerve impulse and continue to activate the receptors. The primary effects felt are from dopamine (pleasure) and norepinephrine (stimulation), although this is obviously an over-simplified description.
