What parts of mushrooms contain psilocybin?
Q: We obtained some psilocybin mushrooms. Our source gave us more than we asked for because he had a lot of mushroom 'garbage' left over -- bits of the underside and a lot of spores. My question is what part of the shroom is psychoactive? Are stems and spores good, or just the caps?
A: Nearly all parts of the mushroom contain psilocybin including the mycelium (white fluffy material which grows underground), stems, gills (underside of cap) and the cap itself. The spores do not contain psilocybin, but they are microscopic and extremely difficult to see with the naked eye unless in mass. If there is dark brown/black crumbly material, this is most likely the gills from the underside of the cap which is what usually makes up the dust in the bottom of a bag of mushrooms.
