What are "Yellow Jackets"?
Q: My friend said he could give me some yellow jackets. From what I hear they are a sort of amphetamine or some other type of stimulent. Have you heard of these?

A: From our Drug Slang Dictionary at :

http://www.erowid.org/psychoactives/slang/

you'll find that the term "Yellow Jackets" was most commonly used as a street term for Nembutal (pentobarbitone, a barbiturate) sold in a yellow capsule in the 1970s.

There is a company now selling an 'herbal' stimulant under the brand name Yellow Jackets which seems to be intentionally using this drug name association. Its primary active ingredients are ephedrine and caffeine and also includes some capsicum (hot pepper extract).

First hand accounts of using this brand of stimulant report that its definitely stimulating and that there is a tolerance effect if its taken on consecutive days. Users should be careful with taking high doses of ephedrine and caffeine as they can be hard on the heart and cause some very unpleasant side effects. Its actually possible to die from taking too many, although we were unable to find any actual dosages listed for this product so its impossible to say what a safe range is. Most people have enough common sense not to take a handful of pills.

If you're interested in the 1970's Yellow Jacket, we only have a small amount of information in our Barbiturates Vault at :

http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/barbiturates/

Barbiturates are pretty uncommon on the street these days, so it's more likely that something represented as 'yellow jackets' would be the herbal stimulant. Always ask! Just ask the person you're getting them from whats in them and if he has a bottle, take a look. If you don't trust that the person selling them knows exactly what they are, don't even consider buying it.

peace,

sage
