Are chemical names the same in all languages?
Q: Do chemical names translate over to other languages or are they universal? Meaning, in another country would codiene still be codeine and other chemicals still go by the names as I know them or would I have to know the name in the other language?
A: No, chemical names are not the same in all languages. Fortunately, they are generally (but not always!) very similar, often just using different spellings.



For example, in German the word for amphetamine is amfetamin, and Lysergic Acid Diethylamide is Lyserg Saeure Diaethylamid (thus LSD).
