Can the liver heal from acetaminophen damage?
Q: Large amounts of acetaminophen cause liver damage. I wanted to know if the damaged tissue is repaired over time, or is that section of the liver just dead? Are there any vitamins that help to repair damaged tissue?
A: Yes, over time the liver can gradually heal itself if you stop taking liver damaging chemicals. Unfortunately, this is a very slow process.



The plant Milk Thistle contains a chemical called silymarin which has been shown to be very good at protecting the liver and helping it heal. It has even been found to offer some protection against poisoning by the Deadly Amanita (A. virosa). Milk thistle extracts are available at most vitamin or health food stores.
