What is the difference between "Rue" and "Syrian Rue"?
Q: Do you have any imformation on the herb "Rue"? Is it a relative of Syrian Rue? I ate some and it seemed colors were more pronounced and the sky looked more beautiful than ever, so i suspect it might have something similiar to safrole. Also, its leaves are shaped like that of sasafras.

A: Rue (Ruta graveolens) is not related to Syrian rue (Peganum harmala). The names are similar because the plants look somewhat similar and grow in similar climates. Rue does not contain the same chemicals as Syrian rue. Rue is quite toxic, and traditional uses of it are as an insecticide or moth repellant, as a source of certain dyes, and to induce abortions. Taking it internally is probably not a good idea. Certain alkaloids in the leaves can also cause blisters if they come in contact with your skin.
