How can I be sure the Mushrooms in my lawn are the real thing?
Q: |
I live in South Australia and in recent weeks after periods of rain, I have noticed what looks to be three different kinds of mushroom growing on my lawn. All of which look similar to photos on your site, but with a couple of slight differences. I don't know any mushroom users, and I don't know of any mycologists in my area. Is there any way I can be sure they are the real thing? (excluding buying books, as I am too poor to afford them, especially with the value of the Australian dollar) or would it be safer to assume they are poisonous? thanks for any help. |

Definitely safer to assume they are poisonous. There is NO way to identify a mushroom based solely on a photo or even a written description. Identifying mushrooms is a complex process and it's easy to make mistakes. There are many varieties which have poisonous look-alikes. Unless you can either explore with a knowledgeable mycologist or take the time to learn the careful process of mushroom identification through reading books and preferably joining a mycological society...we would strongly recommend not eating mushrooms you pick yourself.
Learning to identify mushrooms isn't difficult in and of itself, but it takes training. Because the down-side of eating a poisonous mushroom is so great...one needs to be extraordinarily careful. |
