What is the difference between Wellbutrin and Bupropion?
Q: |
What is the difference between Wellbutrin and Bupropion? I know the difference between Wellbutrin and Wellbutrin SR, but if the name on the prescription says Bupropion is that Wellbutrin or Wellbutrin SR? Will anything happen if I snort 75 mg of it? |

Bupropion and Wellbutrin are the same thing. Bupropion is the name of the chemical, Wellbutrin is the name of a particular brand. Wellbutrin SR is also Bupropion, in a sustained release form. If you have a prescription which specifies "Bupropion", this is most likely the non sustained release form.
In the 1980s, Bupropion was removed from the market because the doses that were prescribed produced seizures in too high a proportion of people. It was re-introduced to the market at significantly lower doses to reduce these problems. Snorting would have the effect of increasing the peak plasma levels, which would therefore also increase the chance of seizures.
We have only received a couple of reports of the insufflated use of Bupropion. Because of the limited amount of data, it's hard to know what the experiential effects would be. You can read the reports we have received at:
