Was LSD laced with strychnine in the 1960s?
Q: I understand that you have almost completely debunked the myth that LSD samples may ever contain strychnine. However I am somewhat confused as in the book "Acid Dreams" by Martin Lee & Bruce Shlain, on page 188, the authors begin to credit part of the downfall of Haight-Ashubry as attributable to samples of lsd showing up laced with amphetamines and strychnine.

I was wondering if you could clear this up.

Also they were saying that STP (now DOM correct?) is chemically related to BZ and has similar effects (as it caused many people to have terrible 3 day experiences) Would this be true as well?

Thank you

A: As is mentioned in one of our pages about the LSD and strychnine myth, there appears to have been a case where strychnine was sold as "LSD powder". It is entirely possible that a single case like this could start such a myth and spread it widely enough that it would make its way into a book such as Acid Dreams. Lee and Shlain don't provide any data to suggest where they got this information, and without a reference or additional data to back it up, I'd chalk it up to a well-spread myth.

Additionally, in the 1960s, LSD was sold primarily in tablet form. This made it considerably easier to add (or replace the LSD with) other chemicals such as amphetamine. Since LSD is now sold primarily in blotter form, this sort of substitution or adulteration is nearly impossible.
