What is Epimedium sagittatum (or "Horny Goat Weed")?
Q: What's the deal with Epimedium sagittatum, commonly sold as "Horny Goat Weed." Noticed it in the gas station mini-mart next to the condoms and such.

A: Epimedium sagittatum appears to be a chinese herbal treatment for the "promotion of yang energy". Some people use it to enhance stamina and/or promote sexual energy. There are currently a lot of herbal products sold which contain Epimedium sagittatum, generally marketted heavily as sexual enhancers. From a quick survey of available products it looks like 500 - 600 mg is a somewhat standard dose. One of the primary physiological effects cited by some sources is the dilation of blood vessels, leading to lower blood pressure.

It also appears to have shown some efficacy in treating kidney disorders. There's been quite a few peer reviewed papers written about Epimedium sagittatum. If you're interested, you can see a list of these at the top link below. I've included a few other links to basic information about E. sgaittatum as well as to examples of some product marketting. A Google search on "Epimedium sagittatum" brings up hundreds of similar products.
