Can hydrochloric acid be used to make Marquis reagent?
Q: Can hydrochloric acid can be substituted for sulfuric acid in the Marquis reagent? If so, what color would MDMA change this reagent?

A: In short, the answer is no. There is very little or no information online about HCl-substituted Marquis reagent, so we prepared some ourselves and compared the results using known compounds to results with standard Marquis reagent made with sulfuric acid. The compounds selected were papaverine, codeine, methamphetamine, and the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin. In all cases no color change was produced. It’s possible that HCl-substituted Marquis might react with some other compounds, but given the chemical variety of the test compounds we used, the likelihood seems very low.
