Is Coricidin Hpf harmful to use?

Recently a friend of mine tried something called Coricdan Hbp. As far as I know it was an over the counter, or behind the counter drug. He described it as being like a mild acid trip. Have you ever heard of this? If so, is it harmful? |

Coricidin Cough and Cold contains both DXM (dextromethorphan) and CPM (chlorpheniramine Maleate) an anti-histamine. DXM is a dissociative contained in many cough medications which is also used recreationally by many people. See the DXM vault for more information.
DXM alone is not significantly harmful if used infrequently. There is a lot of discussion currently about the possibility of toxicity from frequent and higher dose use of DXM. See "This is Your Brain on Dissociatives" for more information about this.
The main problem with using something like Coricidin is that you are also ingesting high levels of other active ingredients such as CPM. In order to get a recreational dose of DXM you will be getting more CPM than you should be taking. The general wisdom on the streets is that for recreational use, only products which have DXM as the only active ingredient should be used. Check the label.
