D.M. Turner (a pen name for Joe Vivian) was a psychedelic explorer and author who wrote two short books on psychedelics--one was a general guide to their use, and the other was the first book on the topic of the Mazatec entheogen Salvia divinorum. An occasional contibutor to The Enthegen Review, Turner was both lionized and criticized within the underground psychedelic community of the early 1990s, due to his intrepid substance combinations. Before his death, he expressed that his next writing project would be a book on the topic of ibogaine. He drowned, likely on New Year's Eve 1996, apparently after injecting an unknown quantity of ketamine while in a bathtub. His gravestone (depicted to the right) lists the date that he was discovered dead, rather than his actual date of death.
