- Oxford English Dictionary Adds "Entheogen"The word "entheogen", coined in 1979 by Jeremy Bigwood, Jonathan Ott, Carl Ruck, Danny Staples, and R. Gordon Wasson, has recently been added to the English language's most exhaustive reference book. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) announced the addition of the word in its September 14, 2007 quarterly update. Other words added the same quarter include "sampladelic", "biomimetic", and "puh-leeze".
Entheogen, n.
A psychoactive substance which is used in a religious ritual or to bring about a spiritual experience, typically a plant or fungal extract; (more widely) any hallucinogenic drug.
