Fresh aboveground herbage was processed into 3 preparations –
Fermented Tea - 250g of freshly dried, crushed leaves were added to 750ml of warm water in a tightly stoppered jar and left in full sun for 2 days, strained, then drunk.
Fortified Leaf - 500g fresh herbage and 2l of purified water mixed in blender. Result was a thick green foamy liquid. Liquid brought to the boil in a small saucepan, taken off heat and left to steep for 10 minutes. Liquid was strained and returned to a low heat to evaporate. Result was a black, thick, sticky resin. Half added to dried leaves and left to dry completely. Other half was kept separate and likewise left to dry completely. Extraction was repeated with another batch of fresh herbage, this time dried leaves from the previous batch were added with slightly more moisture left in the preparation, left to soak overnight, then evaporated in an oven at 50°C until completely dry.
Crude Extract - 1.6g of resin from first the batch of the preparation of the fortified leaf extract was set aside to dry and saved as a crude extract.
Experiment 1: Fortified Leaf (3 days after harvesting)
Fortified leaf was loaded into a water pipe and smoked in one inhalation, held in the lungs for 30 seconds then repeated.
First inhalation - Weight of material is 0.23g. Smoke was harsh, but did not taste all that unpleasant. No effects noticed after 2 minutes.
Second Inhalation - Weight of material is 0.24g. This time a torch lighter was used to ignite the material. Began 4 minutes after first inhalation. A ‘heavy headed’ sensation very similar to that of Salvia Divinorum was noted, although much milder. Pulse rate is slightly elevated (+20 BPM). Also noticed a feeling of increased body heat.
Third inhalation - Weight of material is 0.29g. Ignited with a torch lighter as per second inhalation. Began 4 minutes after second inhalation. ‘Heavy headed’ sensation has become slightly stronger. Sense of time is also slightly increased. No visuals, open or closed eye were observed. Effects subsided within 30 minutes.
The effects were very reminiscent of the level 1 - 2 effects of Salvia Divinorum, although much milder and with the absence of space distortion and cognitive effects. Numerous hits in quick succession may be required to obtain a visionary dose, although this may not be possible due to the harshness of the smoke.
Experiment 2: Fermented Tea (5 days after harvesting)
Experiment began with drinking one cup of Matricaria chamomilla tea over the course of 15 minutes on an empty stomach as a CYP1A2 inhibitor. Fermented tea was drunk immediately after in 250ml batches. The taste of the tea was very strong and quite bitter.
First Cup - Drank over a 10 minute period. 0.07g of dried leaf was smoked through a water pipe after finishing the tea. The same body heat sensation and elevated pulse as experiment 1 are noted. A slight euphoria is also present. Flashes of white light are seen in the corner of vision. No closed eye visuals are observed.
Second Cup - Drank over a 7 minute period 8 minutes after the first cup. Slight nausea is beginning. 0.08g of dried leaf is smoked. The smoked material seems to increase the euphoria slightly.
Third Cup - Drank over a 10 minute period 10 minutes after the second cup. 0.08g of dried leaf is smoked. Once again an increase in euphoria noticed after the leaf is smoked. Auditory hallucinations are present in the form of ringing in the ears and distortion of sounds. An increased appreciation of textured objects noted. Sensation of touch is also amplified. Motor function is slightly impaired. Nausea has become stronger. Effects subsided within 1 hour of finishing the third cup.
Experiment 3: Crude Extract (7 days after harvesting)
Experiment began with drinking one cup of Matricaria chamomilla tea over the course of 15 minutes as a CYP1A2 inhibitor. 1.6g of crude extract was then held sublingually for 30 minutes then discarded.
No effects were noticed using this method. It is unlikely that potency had faded since it was consumed only two days after the fermented tea, which still had much potency. Perhaps a standardised extract would be more effective.
Conclusion
Quite strong effects were obtained using large quantities of plant material. The most effective preparation was the fermented tea although the visionary results were rather muted in comparison to more potent substances.
