DOSE:
2 hits smoked Leonotis leonurus
BODY WEIGHT: 125 lb
First off, let me say that I am an extremely heavy smoker. I have been smoking weed constantly for the past five years and have worked my dose up to about an eighth a day.

Unfortunately, I recently accepted a job that requires me to drug test. I tried to quit cold turkey but found myself missing the ritual of smoking as much as the high. I then decided to look into a variety of natural herbs and extracts that would not be tested for/ are completely legal to smoke. It seemed like the best candidate for the job was Wild Dagga, or Lion's Tail.

Naturally, I was skeptical when I started smoking the flower. I thought 'if it is as good as weed (and cheaper) why isn't it more prevalent?' After I took my first hit, I instantly knew. I was smoking from a bong (I rarely hit pipes or joints) but even so, the smoke stung as it went into my lungs. Remember that I am a heavy smoker and literally NOTHING phases me in terms of smoke. So the fact that I could actually FEEL it in my lungs was a surprise. A light to moderate smoker might be sent into a rage of coughing, especially if they tried to hit it out of a pipe or joint.

Once I got past the stinging (which got milder after the second hit), I got a chance to appreciate how delicious the smoke is. It’s almost sweet, with very little lingering aftertaste. I noticed that it absorbed much more quickly into my lungs than weed does. After holding it for about 10 seconds, there was almost no smoke when I exhaled.

The effects set in a few minutes after my first hit. First, I just felt really happy. I was making dinner and found myself singing and humming (something I never do). My mellow was similar to an Indica weed high. It was kind of spacey, almost blissful. I have read other accounts where people have lost concentration after smoking Dagga, and I can certainly see how that can happen. These moments were really similar to “stoner moments” (e.g. going into a room and not remembering what I was trying to do) and are accompanied by a fogginess in the head.

Unlike weed, however, I didn’t feel couch locked or floppy. I felt relaxation in my jaw, toes and knees, specifically. I had energy to do things, which almost made me feel as if I was in a Disney movie when combined with my blissful headspace. Most interestingly, my speech was very purposeful, clean and well-organized, which is pretty much the opposite of that happens on an Indica weed high. I delighted in conversation and seemed to know exactly what I wanted to say and the most efficient and poetic way to say it.

Another interesting effect of smoking Dagga is how lights get more intense. The contrast between my television and the wall behind it was almost blinding and I found myself squinting a bit. I can imagine that, during the day (I was smoking at night), colors would be amazing to experience. I could also see how it could be distracting and super recommend that people do not try to drive after smoking Dagga.

The effects wore off shortly, 20 minutes to a half an hour after I finished my bowl, so it seems like it needs to be perpetually smoked to sustain the high

.

In summary, the euphoria is similar to weed, but that’s about as far as the similarities go. I definitely felt the effects and had an enjoyable experience.
