That thought looped in my head over and over, along with a massive sense of remembrance. I wanted to say it out loud -- the thought was so strong -- but somehow I knew that the words would come out wrong and it would sound silly.
It was like I was stuck in a moment of time. The instant after both remembering everything and choosing to forget again. My mind felt like it was bursting from information overload but that was nothing compared to what it must have felt like the moment before. Salvia was an old friend I'd seen countless times before, but I'd rung the doorbell right after leaving from our last visit. I felt like a bit of an idiot for forgetting that.
I felt pressure on my left cheek, like I was pressing up against glass (I was sitting in a camping chair outside but it felt like my face was leaning against something invisible). Gravity didn't line up to what I was seeing but it didn't feel odd to me. It felt familiar. More familiar than the way things normally are actually. I changed perspective (only way to describe it) the tiniest amount and the pressure subsided. The thought loop broke at the same time, like moving away from that instant ever so slightly.
Heat was the next thing I noticed. I was still holding the cannabis joint I had used to smoke the extract. ('Oh that's right, I'd smoked Salvia'). I could feel the heat next to my fingers but my muscles didn't work properly. Somehow I knew that Salvia didn't really like to be burned but it was okay, I'd just forgotten.
I managed to open my fingers slightly and let the joint fall out. It didn't fall as much as shift on a plane perpendicular to the ground. The plane that was moving was the same one I'd been pressed up against and I could feel it slide right next to my cheek as the heat moved away from my fingers.
As I looked at the sky and how beautiful everything was I had the sense that I could look anywhere I wanted to. Literally. Every other possibility out there was equally valid, but I liked it here. That thought looped for a while too. 'I like it here'. This is what I had made the choice to forget for. This is my little piece of Earth, my little slice of time. This is what I love.
Gradually the odd perspective shift changed back to normal and my muscle control came back. During this shift nothing really changed but I knew I was back. Everything was perfect just as it always was.
---
My friend who was with me didn't break through that night. He doesn't have much tolerance for cannabis so after it didn't kick in for him he was too stoned to try again. I left the rest of the Salvia with him and told him to call me over if he ever needs a sitter. I don't need it anymore. I just wanted to go home and love my wife.
I've got a feeling he'll feel just as silly as I did when he sees for himself. He's an old friend.
