[Erowid Note: Our understanding of the literature is that there is no such thing as safe recreational use of volatile solvents, aerosols and other street inhalants : their psychoactive effects are inseparable from nerve and organ damage. We have chosen to include these reports to help document the real world use of inhalants, but their inclusion is not intended to imply that they are anything but dangerous.]
Winter had been rather harsh and snow continued to pile up here in Missouri. My step brother at the time and I were bored. We were out of money and out of Bud. We had been snowed in for a while and playing the 360 all day got old.

As a joke I decided to look up ways to get high at home because he kept complaining of our lack of Weed. The list was larger than I thought and I came to Air Duster. He told me that huffing that stuff could 'Really fuck you up.' I called bullshit. Stating I tried it once when I was 13 and nothing happened. He asked if I wanted to try it and I said sure. His buddy Lane from xbox live wanted in too and soon we were on our way to get him.

We picked him up in my beater Ford Tempo and soon 'Acquired' some cans of air duster from Big Lots. The stuff was called Ultra Duster Industrial Strength. It contained DIFLUOROETHANE, R152a. Whatever that is. I am no chemist. They built up how great it would be, talking and telling me how high I would get.

A short time later I pulled into an empty parking lot and shut off the car. This was it, I was going to huff duster. We broke out the cans and they handed me mine first stating that they wanted to witness my reaction. They explained to me to test spray the can clearing it of the freezing liquid and to hold it upright and to inhale through my shirt. I did what they said and, took my first hit as if hitting weed from a pipe.

The first thing I noticed was the tingling sensation.
The first thing I noticed was the tingling sensation.
My fingers and toes, then legs, and soon even chest began to tingle. I held it in noticing my cool deepened rapper-like voice. Once I exhaled the deepness was gone, however the high really hit me. I was dizzy and light headed in such a strange way. I felt blurred but super light. Everything seemed to move faster and sounds distorted oddly. The penned this symptom as a case of the 'Wah-Wahs'. I felt my heart beat throughout my entire body and I felt oddly detached from myself, even cloudy.

I began to get panicky, but they quickly reassured me telling me to relax and go with it. I did and soon the three of us were way high. I would steadily inhale like with weed anytime I would come down, the hits getting longer. My bro would hit it long and hard occasionally and Lane would do short continuous rapid bursts even passing out multiple times. At one point we left the car and ran in circles all of us reporting we felt like the flash. We felt as if we were moving incredibly fast and things were a bit blurred.

[Erowid Note: Driving while intoxicated, tripping, or extremely sleep deprived is dangerous and irresponsible because it endangers other people. Don't do it!]
Eventually we decided to leave to avoid suspicion and I of course was driving. I began absentmindedly hitting the duster while driving! Lane kept passing out doing rapid hits, but my bro was awake and high as fuck. We were going about 30-40 but it felt like 130 or more. I eventually got so high that I had an out of body hallucination/experience while driving. I remember floating above us and watching myself drive from outside my body confused as things would slow down and suddenly speed up even more. I have no idea how we made it home and how I didn't crash the car. They began calling driving my super power and told everyone that no matter what I was on or how high I was I could drive perfect. I also enjoyed drifting and what not so I had decent car control skills anyway. I wouldn't call that a power.

We went into the house and continued huffing the duster. The day blurs into night and night into sleep and we wake up to find the duster cans all empty. We huffed a can each! Also we all had the insane urge to get and do more! We did. This time we did it right in the parking lot and continued to do it in the drive to Lane's house. We spent the day and night there and the high was even stronger. We felt superhuman and as if we could fly. Lane and I began freestyle rapping at some point and he periodically would lose consciousness. Everything became a speedy jaded blur. I felt dissociated from myself and the world. Eventually sleep claimed all of us.

This time we had managed 2 bottles a piece and we had no intention of stopping there. We immediately rushed off back to the store for more! We also got some food while there and ate for the first time in days. We acquired around a total of 12 cans of duster this time and dipped off to my bro's old trailer court. Things really got out of hand. We did so much that Lane stayed blacked out for a good while and I came close to blacking out too. My bro felt sick and nauseous from the bittering agent (at this point we didn't even huff through our shirts) so I rolled a window down for him to throw up. He never did and said it passed. He eventually vomited all over his own lap and I had to stop the car. He opened the door to throw up more and blacked out. He was hanging out the door restrained by only a seatbelt. People were staring and I was incredibly disoriented. I pulled him in and yelled at him to get up and close the door. I slapped and pumched him, but nothing worked. I eventually floored it turning the wheel so the door slammed shut. I pulled into a nearby park and he eventually woke up. We kept at it for all that day and night eventually passing out somewhere that I don't recall ever being.

Eventually we took Lane home to his mother with no good explanation as to what we had been doing. We then went home ourselves and were greeted with angry words. My girlfriend of the time had been worried sick and angry and so were my bro's mom and his step dad (My gfs dad). I came clean to her later and apologized. We never told anyone else. We spent the next few days huffing what we had left in little doses until we ran dry. We then came down becoming not only irritable and irrational, but sick as well. We felt cold and nauseous and could barely hold down any food. We also developed terrible coughs. The desire for more duster was incredible. He told me the addiction was why he quit in the first place. We swore never to do duster again and fought against the overwhelming need for it. We even resorted to huffing gas from a can once to curb the cravings. Eventually we no longer felt the need to do anything and we resumed our previous forays into the partaking of marijuana. Lane eventually ended up in the hospital and after that got into legal trouble and was moved to a behavioral facility. We never saw nor heard from him again.

It is a miracle we came out of the whole ordeal okay. It just wasn't worth it! I can't believe we didn't injure or kill ourselves or anyone else. I have not touched duster since, nor will I ever do it again!

Please do not do inhalants!!!! I know multiple cases here in the state and even people i knew who have died!!!! Especially doing duster and driving!!
