BODY WEIGHT: 185 lb
I have, over the years, had numerous encounters with psychedelic substances including; psilocybin mushrooms and lysergic diethylamide. I had insufflated yopo snuff on 3 previous occasions and found the experiences to be interesting, but not enlightening. One of these encounters was the night previous to the orally administered experience which I will relate here. I haven't been able to dial in the dosage for yopo as of yet. I find that the onset is too intense and that the body load interferes with my ability to appreciate its subtleties.

This is my initial experience with orally administered DMT and my fourth experience with DMT overall. As this was my first excursion into the space using this route, I opted to start with a medium-light dose. Throughout the initial grinding and hot extractions of the plant material I tried to maintain a mindful, meditative, positive mental state.

I prepared my potion by carefully weighing 2 grams each of; acacia confusa root bark, mimosa hostilis root bark, and dried diplopterys cabrerana leaves. I broke the mimosa bark up with my fingers and then pulverized it in a mortar and pestle. The acacia bark was hard as rock and I eventually ended up using a small hammer and a steel plate to break it up before transferring it to the mortar and pestle. The diplopterys leaves I crumbled by hand. I could have used a vita-mix blender to grind all of this stuff up, but I wanted to establish a deeper connection to the material.

The plant materials were placed into a stainless steel pot along with approx. 350 ml (12 fl oz) water and the juice of one large lemon. My water comes from a well on my property and is not chlorinated. The water was brought to a gentle boil, reduced to a simmer, and allowed to simmer in a lidded pot for approx 25 mins. The liquid was poured off into a french press style coffee pot and strained into another container. The plant material was returned to the pot with the juice of ½ lemon and 350 ml water twice more for a total of 3 rounds of extraction, approx. 25 mins. each.

The plant material and all of the extractions were then placed into a plastic water pitcher and allowed to steep cold for 18 hrs. The resultant tea (which was a dusky, sunset orange color with a pleasant, earthy, herbal aroma) was then strained through a paper coffee filter placed in a stainless steel colander. That took 2-3 hours because the fines in the solution tended to clog up the filter paper. The plant matter and filter paper were eventually squeezed of all their liquid and discarded. The fluid was then gently reduced (no boiling or simmering, just an obvious convection current) on the stove top in a stainless steel pan until there was only about 10 fl oz (300 ml) remaining. This liquid was chilled until ready for consumption. Total time invested, 24-26 hours.

I live alone in a small cabin, on a gravel road, adjacent to a busy stretch of 2 lane highway. It is private, secluded, and sits on 2 ¼ acres of land. On the day of consumption I ate a bagel with 1 egg and 3 slices of bacon for breakfast at 8:00 am and fasted for the remainder of the day. I had been anticipating consuming the plant extraction since I had decided shortly after breakfast that I would go ahead and drink it. I went about my business as usual and had a productive day. I mentioned before that I had partaken of yopo snuff the previous evening. I considered whether or not the extraction would even be effective because of the previous night's encounter. I felt optimistic about trying it and decided that a minimal experience would be worthwhile in its own right as my intention was only to have an introduction to these herbs and their effects. It was about 21 hours between insufflating the yopo until I consumed the syrian rue at about 5:25 pm.

T-0:00
Stirred 3 grams powdered syrian rue seeds into a half glass of pineapple soda and drank quickly. The seed powder has a pronounced bitter, earthy, almost leathery flavor.

T-0:25
Felt the first inkling of effect from the rue. I felt relaxed and comfortable. Noticed some light tracing but couldn't tell if it was genuine or psychological.

T-0:35
Effects of rue are more pronounced. Slightly buzzy, mildly euphoric. Nothing to write home about. Offered up a brief prayer of thanksgiving for the sacrament and for knowledge, guidance, and safety during the coming encounter. Drank the plant extract quickly in one pull. The taste was tannic, sour, bitter, earthy, and herbal but it was not cloying and the taste did not linger very long.

T-0:45
Feeling mildly disoriented. Equilibrium seems slightly off. Gross motor skills are effected. A little clumsy. I think “Here it comes.” I light candles throughout the house, douse the lights, tune DirecTv to the Zen music channel, slowly eat a piece of crystallized ginger to help counteract any possible nausea, lie down, and wait for the show to begin. I practice deep breathing exercises as I wait for the effects to ramp up. They relax me and really seem to help me with feelings of dizziness and nausea.

T-1:05
Feelings of disorientation are stronger. There is an unusual feeling in my stomach. It's not really nausea just a queer, unsettled feeling. I consider getting up for more ginger but decide to just lie still and wait it out. I begin to notice auditory flangeing of the highway noises. OEV is some mild patterning and shadow play. CEV is indistinct light and dark areas that change slowly and seem to hint at landscapes beyond, as if seen through a dense fog.

T-1:30
The unsettled feeling in my stomach is passing. Tryptamine effects seem to come in waves, sometimes strongly and at other times are quite mild. OEVs are more pronounced. The candlelight passing through the wax of one of the candles is reminiscent of sunlight through stained glass. The space seems calm, and somehow sacred. Prolonged looking at the palm of my hand causes the lines to form the wrinkled face of a wise seeming old man whose mouth seems poised to speak and yet he withholds his counsel. I soon realize that I am in fact, hungry. I am comfortable with my current level of engagement with the plants. I would be accepting of going deeper, but I don't feel disappointed that I haven't. I get up and eat a handful of sweet potato chips. The crunchy texture and salty, sweet unctuousness of the chips is agreeable at first but quickly causes me to wonder if I had acted too soon. A brief wave of genuine nausea hits and I decide to lay back down for a few minutes. The feeling quickly passes and other than a few mild aftershocks does not return.

T-1:50
Surprise. The chips seem to have released some of the active chemical stored in my bile. I feel really good at this point. Waves of euphoria wash over me. A pleasant tingling buzzing sensation permeates my body. It's as if I am being filled with sparkling, golden, liquid energy. I feel and verbally express my gratitude for the wonderful experience I am having. This gratitude I am feeling extends to every aspect of my life. I realize how blessed I am to have this existence. I am made aware of how much love has been showered upon me by the people in my life. I am made mindful that the time I have with these people is brief and that one day, before I am prepared for it to happen they will leave me and go to where I can neither retrieve them nor follow. I am at that time, not saddened by this idea. I feel too good, too grateful to have ever had it in the first place, and so I accept it as the inevitability that it is and move on.

T-2:00 – 4:00
My moment of gratitude precedes a constant stream of philosophical musings, personal epiphanies, laughter at the ridiculousness of the way we act and treat each other, and moments of deep introspection where I ruthlessly pick to pieces some of the paradigms I have held to be factual at various times in my life. During this time I gradually smoked 2 bowls of Leonotis Leonuris. I have found that for me the effects of this herb and its cousin Leonotis Nepetifolia seem to be synergistic with DMT and its analogs. Each seemed to enhance and strengthen the effects of the other. I also occasionally stop to eat another handful of chips.

T-4:30 +
The effects of the plants are fading. The peak is decidedly over. The next 3 hours are a gentle return to near baseline. When I go to bed I am exhausted. My dreams are complex and deeply detailed with echoes of the ideas I explored earlier resonating throughout. When I awaken the next morning I am tired but happy and the experience of the preceding evening doesn't leave me feeling senseless and diminished but I instead feel improved. It's similar to the feeling of taking a shower and washing away the grime and dust after a day's labor. To paraphrase the late Bill Hicks “My third eye has been squeegeed clean.”
