I was 5 days past my due date and scheduled to be induced. After being put on a pitocin drip, a few hours later, contractions started. They felt like a tightening of the muscles in my pelvis mixed with lower back pain. After a while, the back pain started getting much worse and constant. By noon, the back pain was an awful soreness, like I had slept weird, and during a contraction it was a really horrible pain, like when you attempt a back bend without warming up first. If it was a one-time occurrence I would rate it 6 out of 10 on the pain scale, but the mere fact that I knew it would be non-stop for hours made it an 8. I curled up into as much of a ball as I could, gripping my pillow tight in my right fist, and told my husband to get the nurse so I could have an epidural.

The nurse came in and told me the anesthesiologist was at a c-section, but she could give me some pain meds via IV in the meantime. “Yes! Anything, please!” She gave me a Stadol drip and it made me feel house-party drunk instantly, then the pain went away, replaced by a warm tingly sensation, almost ecstacy-like. She said it would make me sleepy and I could feel it happening almost immediately. My eyes were soon closed, but my mouth was dry and it felt like, if I didn't think about breathing, I would forget how and suffocate, but it also felt like that notion was the retarded thought of someone tripping on acid.

I passed out for what felt like an hour, but was probably just 20 minutes. The nurse came in and told me the anesthesiologist could see me. At that point I still wasn't feeling any pain anymore, but what the hell? Might as well take the opportunity while it was there. The drunk, druggy feeling had passed and I felt normal, but there was no come down or wash of cold, like I get with ecstasy. It was just a clearing of the mind.
