Until recently, I have never used any drug, with the exception of Caffeine and Alcohol. The world of using substances had never really appealed to me; except a slight curiosity about psychedelics.

Then I started university, and I was suddenly exposed to this world. My friend's flatmates had used nitrous at a social gathering; and after research into how low-risk and short-acting Nitrous is, I satisfied my new curiosity and bought a “nitrous starter kit” consisting of a cracker, balloons, and 10 cartridges.

Before trying the Nitrous, I secured the room around me; safety was important – a safe method, a very low-risk substance, and the right setting. Door locked, bed cleared, nothing that could harm me or be used to harm myself (I had no idea how I would react, having never used anything else). Then, I put on some lively but relaxing music, just loud enough to mask the filling of a balloon.

Sitting on the end of my bed, I placed the shiny metallic cartridge into the cracker, which itself is a light-blue-tinted piece of well-engineered aluminium. I screwed the cracker closed, puncturing the cartridge; placed a balloon over the end; and put on a pair of gloves to protect my fingers from frostbite from the cracker once the gas was released. I unscrewed the cracker carefully, and with a tremendous whoosh, the cartridge released it's precious load and the cracker was promptly covered in a layer of condensation which immediately froze. The balloon was quickly peeled off the end, and the ice-cold cracker put on the floor.

Having taken several deep breaths to calm my nerves and oxygenate my blood, I exhaled as much as my lungs could manage and placed my mouth over the end of the balloon. I breathed in what can only be described as the sweetest breath I have ever tasted; and promptly held it as I placed the balloon to the side of me.

First, I noticed a strange pulsating humming or buzzing; there is no exact word for what it sounded like. The pitch of the music seemed to drop dramatically, and morph in and out of focus, like the bass was being modulated. Yet somehow the music seemed more real, deep in both pitch and emotional value, and innately part of my mind. By this point, it must have been 5 or 10 seconds after inhaling, but time was irrelevant in this strange new version of reality. My face felt oddly numb and tingly, I could not resist touching my cheeks and my lips, but could still feel the touch of my hands. It was at this point I realised my body had exhaled and begun to breathe, it refused to wait for oxygen any longer; during this I also noticed I was now lying backwards. This was not at the front of my attention though, it felt far away and irrelevant, a mere side thought. My vision was oddly focused, not exactly tunnelled, but distant and direct. In my visual field there were pixelated black dots all over; like an analogue TV with less-than-perfect signal, or seeing stars when standing up too quickly, but far less intense.

I closed my eyes and in my mind there were many thoughts, and avenues for thought, that I could explore if I had the time. I marvelled at how different my perception felt, the unusual and exciting version of reality I was experiencing
I marvelled at how different my perception felt, the unusual and exciting version of reality I was experiencing
; the world I was in consisted of my mind and everything external was somehow part of that. I felt light, happy, excited, and joyful; I was immersed in a blissful moment of new understanding. This train of thought went on for what seemed like a minute or two, but was probably only 15-20 seconds.

Slowly the music began to return to normal, I felt almost reunited with my body, though I'd never left – it merely felt as if I'd suddenly stumbled upon the present situation. Having opened my eyes, the artefacts in my vision had disappeared as quickly as they'd come. The distortions in sound lingered for a short while as I lay there taking in what I'd just experienced. It must have lasted no more than 40 or 50 seconds; but it was the most incredible moment of insight into perception I have ever experienced.

This was a new world, and an exciting and incredible adventure was waiting for me.
