I've now been on mirtazapine for several months, and so far I must say I am pleased with how it's been making me feel. Anxiety wise, I have noticed a marked improvement; I no longer get anxious in sitations where I may have previously such as in crowds. My intrusive thoughts have pretty much stopped, and my mood feels so much more stable, I no longer have days when I am feeling blue. On the other hand though mood wise, I do feel that mirtazapine has perhaps blunted my emotions somewhat, I don't feel down yet I don't feel happy either, just neutral. Nothing seems to scare me or bother me anymore.
Sleep wise, this medication makes me sleep like a log; an hour after taking it, and I'm out like a light. Every night though, I get such bizarre dreams. Another strange effect mirtazapine has been having on me is that it sometimes makes me experience dream like states before I am fully asleep, almost like hallucinations. This can sometimes alarm me when this occurs; last night I was convinced somebody was in my room and I slept the rest of the night with the light on. This only seems to happen though when I am in bed and very relaxed.
Another thing I want to comment on is the sleep duration, man does this stuff make me sleep for long periods. I find it even stronger than medications from the 'Z' variety. Fortunately I currently work from home so don't have to get up for a set time, which is great as I'm often out for a good 12 hours or more. I honestly don't know how I would cope if I had to be up very early whilst taking this medication; I certainly wouldn't be safe to drive anywhere that's for sure.
To summarise, I'm feeling pretty good overall on mirtazapine. I'm thankful that I have found a medication that works for me without having to visit the doctor too many times to try different meds.
