I have been taking modafinil for about 10 months at this point, with the starting 200 mg dose maintained over the duration. I take it as a single pill on waking up.
Due to a nasty bout of depression around 2 years back, and continuing till last year, I also take Prozac 20 mg per day. I drink infrequently, and occasionally smoke or eat edibles, maybe 3 or 4 times a month.
I also take Prozac 20 mg per day. I drink infrequently, and occasionally smoke or eat edibles, maybe 3 or 4 times a month.
Recently, I was started on a regimen of 20 mg Ritalin SR on request. It's had a reasonably positive experience on my overall academic performance and ability to concentrate, but with several caveats.
I take it concurrently with modafinil, despite my doctor initially advising me not to. I based this decision on the lack of overly negative side effects as reported by others on a similar regimen.
However, while Ritalin helps me for maybe a few hours after dose, it wears off quickly within approximately 3 hours, and combined with modafinil exacerbates tachycardia and heart palpitations that I used to get on modo alone.
Thus, I use it exclusively in the period before examinations, as I would prefer to suffer the short withdrawal period after discontinuation than the persistent comedowns from daily use.
I've taken it in a multitude of ways, including modifying the prescribed dose to a maximum of 80 mg a day. But do note this was done just prior to a an important test, and I needed to pull an all nighter. Such a high dosage is definitely not sustainable for me.
I also occasionally chew the SR tablets when in a rush, or when the comedown starts at an inconvenient time. This gives a quick jolt of energy, but makes the tachycardia and jitters much worse.
In conclusion, I would say that modafinil alone was unabashedly useful for me, with the side effects being mild tachycardia and cotton mouth with excessive thirst. It along with Ritalin is helpful, but a double edged sword, I only use it as a crutch to cope with my general akrasia and lack of focus which was probably caused by those depressive episodes.
