My experience with cotton fever occurred in the winter of 2010. I went to visit my friend at a local state college, a smallish “artsy” school. For whatever reason, IV drug use was an epidemic there. Naturally, my friend and I bought two blue M30s, the Mallinckrodt 30 mg oxycodone HCl tablets—we called them “roxis” back in the day. We took turns shooting them up in the unisex bathroom by the cafeteria, as it had a lock on the door. We used cotton pulled from Q-tips as filters. I didn’t get that high, but there was a buzz. If I remember correctly, the needle became clogged with cotton, and some of the solution was wasted. I probably injected a very small amount of cotton, too.

I do not recall exact timing, but about 30 minutes later, I started to feel ill. Initially, it started with a mild cold sweat and a headache. These symptoms intensified over the next 30 minutes. Then I began to feel overtly feverish with a chill and some body shakes. My muscles ached, as well. I was spending the night on the couch in the common area of an acquaintance’s dorm room, and everyone went to bed soon after my symptoms started.

I spent the next three hours lying on the couch covered in a blanket shaking violently and sweating profusely. I began to feel nauseous. I chugged a large glass of cold water. Immediately after, I went outside and projectile vomited twice. It was all water. I then went back inside and laid down again. I felt much better by that point and slowly drifted off to sleep. I awoke around 8:00 A.M. and got a ride home, feeling mostly back to normal but with some mild body aches that went away throughout the first half of the day.

I continued to use drugs for about 1.5 years after that experience and never again developed cotton fever. As of this writing, I have been off all substances (other than caffeine and nicotine) for a little over nine years. Anyway, cotton fever was hellish but also short-lived and self-resolving within approximately six hours.
Best of luck in your journeys, sober or not.
