Passing Out on Mushrooms

TLDR: took shrooms, smoked weed on the come-down. Stood up, became light-headed, tried to wait it out but passed out instead. There’s a semi-scientific explanation as to why this happened to me and why it happens to other people at the bottom.

It was a gloomy December evening. Another semester of college had just finished up for my friend (here on out referred to as M) and I. With nothing to do but waste time, we decided it would be a good time to experiment with Mushrooms for the first time. M and I are both heavy cannabis users, and have both experimented with LSD a handful of times. I did not fast on the day of the trip, but did eat lighter than normal.

We each consumed approximately 2 grams of mushrooms in capsules. As this was our first dose of mushrooms, we were just wanting to dip our toes in the water, so to speak. I had relatively minor effects, only having slight visual hallucinations for maybe 5-10 minutes. The most noticeable effect was an absolutely stoning, couch-locking, body high. Because of this, I got comfy on a couch and didn’t move through the entire come-up, peak, and into the come-down.

Approximately 1.5 hours after the peak, our mutual friend, W, came over as he was in the same predicament. Happy to see him, and wanting to boost the effects of the mushrooms, we decided to fire up M’s vaporizer and smoke some weed. After 1 or 2 bowls, I was starting to feel some effects (I have a high tolerance, so this was really not much for me). This is when I remembered I had some leftovers in the fridge. This was not my first time standing up during the trip (I had previously went to the bathroom), but as I stood in the kitchen waiting for my food to re-heat in the microwave I began to feel light-headed and my vision began to fade to black around the edges.

Prior to this, I had passed out once in my life, so I sort of knew what was happening, but was confident I could just wait it out and regain composure by leaning over and resting my head on my arms on the counter. After all, I had some delicious leftovers 1 minute away from being ready to eat. I did not want to leave the kitchen and go sit down. I made it through the minute, and feeling slightly better, I grabbed the plate and began to make my way back to the living room where M and W were. When I began walking back, my vision started to fade again, so I tried to rush and get to somewhere I could sit.

I didn’t make it. As I turned the corner into the living room, my vision was nearly completely gone. Luckily M and W were standing near the doorway messing with the speakers connected to the TV, so when I said “F**k me I’m passing out” they were standing close enough to not totally arrest my fall, but were able to get me to the ground gently. The instant I was on the ground, on my back, I regained total composure and no longer felt light-headed. The fact that I was never actually on the ground unconscious was corroborated by them. I laid there for a few minutes, totally dumbfounded but feeling fine (except for an intense full-body sweat) before getting up and sitting back down on the couch.

This experience, as you can imagine, ruined the evening. M and W continued to smoke weed, but I declined, hoping to completely sober up soon. This led me to do some research, and while I am no expert, I think that I understand the reason why this happened. Research points to mushrooms being a vasoconstrictor (just like LSD), and weed is a vasodilator (why your eyes get red – those blood vessels are engorged). These 2 fighting with each other, paired with what I can only imagine to be slightly low glucose/low blood pressure from eating less than usual that day, seems to be a recipe for losing consciousness.
