Underwhelming, Why Do People Like This...
Ether

DOSE:
50 ml inhaled Ether (liquid)
I had heard about people using diethyl ether recreationally, and I researched it and found it to be relatively safe, so I decided to try it.

I prepared approximately 250ml of diethyl ether, made by acid catalyzed dehydration of ethanol 2 days prior to using it. A piece of paper towel was folded, and enough ether to cover a spot in the center about 5 or 6 cm in diameter was added. This was then inhaled repeatedly. I noticed a very unpleasant burning at the back of my throat, followed by my nose becoming stuffed up, though this may or may not have been due to the ether. After around 30 minutes of this, with the ether being replenished as needed, there was a strong feeling of vibration
After around 30 minutes of this, with the ether being replenished as needed, there was a strong feeling of vibration
, it felt as if I were leaning on a ringing bell (not my analogy, but it’s very accurate). This feeling wore off rather quickly, after only a few minutes.

After this, I decided to get up and walk around every 5 minutes, to gauge my level of intoxication. After around 15 minutes, I was stumbling around quite dramatically. It was at around this time that I noticed my sensitivity to touch had been greatly reduced, and I was able to scratch myself relatively hard without it feeling painful. Around 15 minutes later, I was barely able to walk or close the bottle of ether. I decided to stop here. Over the course of around the next 10 or 20 minutes, I slowly regained my coordination. As I’m writing this report around an hour later, I can still taste the ether, and I likely smell quite strongly of it.

I have to say I’m quite underwhelmed. I was expecting it to be somewhat euphoric and dissociating, as other experience reports typically say. It was not. Mentally, I felt pretty much completely sober the entire time. I’m assuming I didn’t get a high enough dose, but I don’t see how one could get much higher of a dose than inhaling from an ether-soaked paper towel for an hour.

All in all, I’d give it a 1 out of 10. It was rather boring, and not worth the awful taste and smelling like ether for the next little while. A waste of a perfectly good 50ml of ether.
