I want to start this report by saying DO NOT I repeat DO NOT attempt to do this unless you are experienced with psychedelics and altered states of conciseness in general and definitely without proper physical safety precautions, which I will explain below. DO NOT attempt this without first seeing how the substance you are planning on taking will effect you.
Background:
I am an experienced user of psychedelics; I have done most of the classical ones, LSD, Mescaline, Psilocybin, DMT, and have worked my way through a fair portion of the Shulgin chemicals over the years. I never really had access to or the desire to experiment with Ketamine though.
Due to a combination of the COVID-19 lock-down, stress from being in college, and worries about the future, my mental health has been degrading over the last few years. I have long suffered from depression, but recently it has been worse than ever and I was beginning to suffer from severe social anxiety and had started to withdraw from life. Do to my families medical history, traditional anti-depressants where not really an option for me, and my anxiety levels where such that I did not believe that I could mentally handle the possibly intense come up that most psychedelics can inflict on someone, so I was stuck in a rut both mentally and physically.
Help came with the rise of FDA approved at home Ketamine treatments. I was skeptical at first, mainly due to the cost, but I eventually found a provider that offered a generous discount for those with low income and after completing their intake I was mailed a packet of troches. With this I begin working with the provider to determine the dose that was correct for me and I began taking the recommended dose once a week. The effects where almost instantaneous and my symptoms of depression and anxiety where almost non existent after the first week. Ketamine also has a sedating effect, that is very calming, so I was not stressed during the come up as I had experienced in the past with other psychedelics.
It was also around this time that I became aware of a spa facility offering isolation tank sessions for a good price, and I long being interested in trying out a sensory deprivation tank, booked a 90 minute session one day a few months ago to see what it was like. For this first float session, I only consumed a small THC edible and took a few hits off of a THC vape cartridge, and I greatly enjoyed the experience.
The spa that I went to also provides a flotation device for your neck, that guarantees that your head will remain well above the water which is why I decided to book a longer 2 and a half hour session the following month and combine it with one of my weekly Ketamine doses.
Note on Safety:
Using any type of psychedelic around water is potentially dangerous, this is doubly true for dissociative drugs like Ketamine, and I cannot stress enough that the only reason I felt safe enough to attempt this was due to already being aware of how my body would react to a similar dose and the fact that the spa provided the flotation device to be used while in the isolation tank. DO NOT do this without a flotation device of some sort that will ensure that your head remains above the water and prevents you from rolling over. DO NOT do this in a swimming pool or a natural body of water. The water level in a float tank is generally only about a foot deep and is heavily salted to ensure buoyancy. DO NOT snort a line of Ketamine and jump into a pool or a lake, you will drown.
The Trip:
I woke up early that day to go to the gym and saw a double rainbow, which I took as a good omen. I got back to my place, showered ate a light breakfast and went on my way to pick up some cannabis from the dispensary to help with the nausea that Ketamine can cause, especially in larger doses. I purchased a THC infused soda and a vape cartridge and hopped on the bus that would take me to the spa facility. On the bus ride over, I opened and drank half of the THC soda for a dose of around 50mg and I was planning to hit my vape pen a few times as well, but the infused soda hit me way harder than I was expecting

The bus ride thankfully ended, and myself already being high out of my mind decided to forgo hitting the vape cartridge, and I went straight to the spa, where I was led to the private float tank room. The moment I stepped into the room and closed the door behind me, most of the weed induced pre-trip anxiety that I had started to evaporate. The spa I go to has several float tank rooms, and while I had an enjoyable time the first time that I went, I found the room I was in to be a bit cold and cramped, and not that well lit. The room I was given this time was bright and warm, and felt more open, so I felt instantly safe. Before taking the Ketamine troche I quickly washed myself off in the room's shower and placed the provided neck flotation device around my neck and laid in the float tank to see how secure I truly felt with it on and just being in the tank again, and whatever doubts I had about doing this went away entirely.
The flotation device fit snugly around my neck and propped my head up much further than I remembered; it was like being in bed with a pillow, and it was also wide enough that turning over would be impossible. I laid there for a few minutes just enjoying the sensation of floating and I decided to take the full dose. I got out of the tank, retrieved my troche, put my bluetooth headphones in and started the playlist that I had made the night before for this purpose. I placed the dose in my mouth under my tongue and got back into the tank, placed the flotation device firmly around my neck, closed the lid on the tank and laid back into the water. The automatic room lights turned off a few seconds after that. I was now in complete darkness, so I turned on the blue mood light in the tank and waited for the Ketamine troche to fully dissolve and begin to take effect.
The troche takes a while to dissolve and the longer you hold in your saliva, the more Ketamine you will absorb for a stronger effect. I hold in mine for at least 20 minutes although the effects start to manifest themselves before that.
I had put some thought into the music I would be listing to during the experience. I knew that it would be a 20 minute process for the troche to fully dissolve so I started my playlist with gentle ambient music from various artist to relax myself while the troche was dissolving, then it would switch to the soundtrack from Koyaanisqatsi (an excellent movie!) and a series of recordings of Alan Watts lectures set to trance music while in the depths of the experience. It would then wrap up a few classic songs from The Beatles and Pink Floyd for the come down. It was about 2 hours of music in total to match my time booked.
I had timed it well as by the time the troche had dissolved and I was beginning to really feel the effects of the Ketamine the sound track from Koyaanisqatsi had started. I pressed the button to turn off the mood light and submerged myself in complete darkness.
The first thing I noticed were stars forming in front of me and then it looked like the classic going into hyper-drive from Star Wars but then it kept going faster and faster until my view of the stars shifted into an endless field of interlocking blood red cubes, I felt like I was looking at the base quantum layer of the universe. Still I was accelerating until the red cubes where blue-shifted into a diamond shape pattern. This feeling of great acceleration continued along with various endless fields different shapes and colors. It was definitely being influenced by the music as the shift in shapes and color patterns where shifting along with the music.
It was definitely being influenced by the music as the shift in shapes and color patterns where shifting along with the music.
I knew I was going somewhere, but I didn’t know where I was going. Until I was there, and I don’t mean that like I arrived somewhere, but in that I was There. There Was I, I was the destination. I was being stretched across all of space and time. I was everywhere, but nowhere. I was everything, but nothing. Existing and not existing in an eternal quantum flux. I felt like I was part of the water in the tank, an endless interdimensional river. There were bright lights now, even though the room was in complete darkness. The lights illuminated the walls of the tank, which had become the walls of some sort of futuristic submarine/spaceship interior, with bolts and portholes. I was not alarmed by this, as I had been in this tank for centuries and would be for countless eons as I was tasked by the great energy of the universe to catalog all of the stars in the universe, and it made sense that if you where going to build a spaceship that would be traveling through space at great speed forever, to fill the interior with liquid to prevent the occupant from being harmed by the momentum.
The music kept shifting and I began to see the outlines of endless cities and forests in the distance. I was not really there at this point, but it was like watching a movie if my eyes were the camera playing it. The walls of my ship shifted as well with the music, as if designed by every human culture throughout history. I was still dimly aware that I had not always been in this state and it would at some point be over, and that I must be near the peak of this experience, but if not then this was not the worst way to spend forever. Then the Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack ended and the Alan Watts psytrance music started, and shifted the trip completely.
The Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack is almost completely instrumental with chanting of various types being the only vocals. So I think the sound of a human voice talking about the nature of reality and existence shifted the trip in a different direction. The feeling of acceleration stopped and the visual field went to black, a web of water vines appeared before me, and these were almost photo realistic, and I floated up out of the water along the vines into the sky above a lake in a forest. The lighting went from day to night, and the camera began to move in and out to various different places, cities, nature, I watched a canyon form. I saw alternate versions of my life and my possible futures, and all of this was in high quality movie like footage. I think we exist in a multiverse that's structured like a honeycomb. Each section of the comb containing a different timeline, and the walls of the honeycomb separating the different timeline is the place you go when you breakthrough on DMT.
I began to feel another presence in the tank with me and I began to notice the shape of a head made of light, that shifted into a pillar of light of infinite height. The light began to shine on me and it began to heat up. It kept getting brighter and hotter and I was afraid that I was going to be burned, but it never got hot enough to feel painful or uncomfortable. Then I was an endless field of pure whiteness being molded into a ball with a sense of pressure building along with the heat from the light. This was not painful either, just a strange feeling. When the remolding was done I was a perfect sphere radiating energy, and I floated into place with countless other spheres all floating around what looked like the nucleus of an atom.
The rest of the trip is what I can only describe as an endless cycle of death and rebirth and being returned to the center nucleus of reality, until the Ketamine began to wear off and I began to become aware of my body and reality again. I started to splash the water around a bit, still getting visuals on the wall of the tank, infinite fractal patterns and hallways of light as Pink Floyd started to play. I waited until I was able to sit up without feeling dizzy and turned the light back on in the tank. Then I stood up and the lights in the room kicked on automatically. Starting to feel nauseous on the Ketamine come down, I got back into the room shower to wash the salt from the tank off of me and to stand under the hot water until I felt better.
I then got dressed, paid the spa people and began to make my journey home. I felt nausea until I was able to get lunch and take a nap, which is common with Ketamine and is my main complaint about it. I woke up feeling refreshed and ready to begin my next semester of classes.
The place Ketamine takes you has a lot in common with the place DMT takes you, but they are both very different and its hard to describe to someone who hasn’t done both. I’m just thankful that Ketamine is so widely available now to help people.
