I had 28 grams of dried grade-A Washington state Amanita mushroom caps, purchased from on an online vendor for around 23 bucks. Having read a large number of reports, I decided to begin with roughly 5-6 grams. I measured the caps out on a scale (it ended up being about 1.5 caps) and began eating them plain. Everyone swears they taste like chicken, and I'm inclined to agree, however they smell like uric acid -- nasty. Thankfully it only took a minute or two to ingest the things, and a shot of tequila to make the sense memory go away.
As expected it took about an hour and a half for any effects to be felt. I chose the Washington variety of mushrooms as I had read there's less chance of nausea, and sure enough there was none. Right around the hour and a half mark I began to feel sleepy, and decided to go to bed. I’m not entirely sure that I actually went to sleep, but a half hour later the sleepiness had dissipated and my brain had subtly rewired itself.
Like Salvia, Amanita produced in me a sensation of movement, even when standing still. But where Salvia tends to make me feel as though the whole world is spiraling counter-clockwise, Amanita made it seem as though I were constantly in the process of jumping. This became even more pronounced when I left my apartment for a walk. After a hundred yards outside, my mind was a kite, smoothly sailing in the wind, thirty feet in the air. My actual perspective didn’t change, but there was a strong sense of detachment from my physical body. The physical size of things became difficult to grasp. Early on I came across some structures on campus that I hadn’t seen before. From about twenty feet away, I couldn’t figure out if they were benches or tables.
All this time, it’s important to note that while my perceptions were significantly altered, my thoughts remained completely lucid. For the first hour or so of the experience, this was negligible, as I was just feeling my way around, attempting to find all the effects. Later, though, I began meditating in an abandoned courtyard, and found Amanita to be quite conducive to working out otherwise difficult conceptual problems. I had recently finished Capra’s “The Web of Life,” and was having a difficult time understanding how perception arbitrarily delineates between “things.” In normal life, this sort of problem would be difficult to address as there are so many distractions that prevent me from abstracting myself out of the equation – in this case Amanita took care of all of that.
All said, this was a great experience. Next time I will try to come up with some conceptual problems ahead of time, and probably up the dose to maybe 10 grams.
