Background:

After doing my research and reading up on the experiences of others, I had finally decided to give tramadol, the barely-controlled 'sub-opioid' painkiller, a try. I had ignored the substance for years, seeing as it is considered very weak and subtle, and what I'd heard (and read) about it was so varied - some people seemed to love it, but most thought it was complete shit.

One day I received a legit script of this drug for the pain of a badly sprained ankle. Since I was in no hurry to use it and had better painkillers on hand, it ended up being ignored for a few months. One day I finally decided to try it to see if it had any sort of decent recreational value.

You should know that I am an experienced user of various substances, including various opioids ranging from codeine to heroin. However, I do not use opiates very frequently, usually only once every couple of weeks, so my tolerance is pretty low. I mention my opiate use because this report is of my first (and probably last) experience with tramadol as an opioid substitute.


Report:

After reading that 150mg is a good starting dose for those with a generally low opiate tolerance, I took just that. After about a half hour or so, I began to feel something- subtle as hell, but definitely something. It almost felt like a mild hydrocodone come-up at first because of the slight warmth and vague sense of relaxation, but it never got beyond that. It was mildly stimulating, yet made my mind foggy and slow. It was not euphoric at all, so after an hour and a half of mostly feeling strange and detached, I thought maybe it just wasn't enough for me. So, about two hours after ingesting my first dose, I decided to take an additional 100mg. This only proved to make the experience less subtle, and thus more uncomfortable. I got slightly nauseous and felt fidgety and even disgusting, but not in the 'I did too much' way- it was just a yucky feeling I've never felt with any real opiate. After a couple hours of feeling pretty nasty, it finally tapered off (aided by my smoking some weed to help clear the residual brain-yuck).

My conclusion? Definitely unimpressed, but I hadn't expected all that much. Tramadol did not feel like any proper opioid, that's for sure. While it wasn't agonizingly unbearable, it was still Very dysphoric and not at all enjoyable. While some people report needing much higher doses to get a proper high, I'm not sure I like this drug anywhere near enough to experiment with it further- especially as there's a small but real seizure risk at higher doses.
