However, if you suffer, or have suffered from severe depression - specifically Bipolar Depression, and have found that standard anti-depressants (SSRI's) do not work, or if you are dealing with a crisis level of anxiety, depression, mania, obsession or temporary psychosis, then read on...
It is important to note my emphasis on the extremely traumatic state that is produced by drug withdrawal - specifically after years of dependance to Benzodiazepines, Narcotics and Stimulants - the withdrawal from which can at times bring about a psychotic break.
My specific situation, and the reason that I decided to try Olanzapine, was because of the utter emotional chaos brought about by the abrupt cessation of the long term use of Benzodiazepines (Clonazepam in my case), Narcotics Painkillers (oxycodone and hydrocodone) and Methylphenidate (Ritalin).
I have taken most of the major antidepressant types, and found Seroquel (Quetiapine) which is an atypical anti-psychotic, to have been the most effective up to the point of trying Olanzapine.
So putting this as simply as possible, after the grueling withdrawal that I endured (without support of any kind) and the incredibly challenging life that I am facing having decided to live without pharmaceutical drugs - I should be struggling and staggering under the weight of the load I have undertaken.
But the Olanzapine has not only helped me through the withdrawal itself, but is having an incredible effect on my state of mind while adjusting. I should be suffering - yet I feel positive, balanced, enthusiastic, and driven. After years of antisocial behavior I am instigating and forming friendships, participating in my community, and feel unafraid to take on the challenges that I face as a result of my decision to clean up my act.
This is a serious drug. It has no recreational appeal (and no abuse potential), and it has some side effects that are something of a price (rapid weight gain and heavy sedation the first short while).
However as a legitimate medicine in even the most severe of cases of psychological distress - this has truly been a 'wonder drug' for me. It has unquestionably made an otherwise unbearable situation an ongoing positive experience.
