Bupropion Interacts With Amphetamine!

I’m treating an anxiety-depression with bupropion and was curious as to whether it also would block the positive effects of speed, a drug I enjoy(ed) and used quite frequently in the past. This would seem quite likely, considering amphetamine clearly is acting through the norepinephrine-dopaminergic pathway, and is used (off label) to treat both methamphetamine and cocaine addiction. I was getting ready for a big Swedish holiday coming up in a few days, and didn’t want to ruin the festivities with a “bad trip”, and so I decided to do this experiment a few days in advance.

4.20 PM
I orally administered 50 mg of common “street speed” bought from my regular trustworthy supplier. I was sitting in my home playing computer and invited a couple of friends over, one of whom was tripping on acid. We had a sober sitter, which is always a good idea when experimenting with unknown drug combinations. Bupropion acutely lowers the seizure threshold and some data points in the direction that amphetamine would lower it even further. Coincidentally I am also medicating with an anticonvulsant (lamotrigine) on a daily basis, for bipolar disorder, so I’m actually “on” a prescription drug designed to higher the seizure threshold. Coincidental but welcomed.

6.20 Nothing has happened so far, but soon I’m starting to feel slightly uneasy. I dropped another 50 mg and soon the first dose kicks in. I’m talking fast, switching subject, losing focus and getting all those “jittery” effects common when using speed. BUT I was not experiencing any euphoria or other pleasurable feelings of wellbeing. None at all! It was actually much like having taken way too much caffeine.

Knowing that I’m reacting cyclically on speed and often need to physically activate myself in order to “kick start” the experience, I took my bike for a really fast ride for about 1.5 h hours. When I came home, I was actually coming down and soon I was extremely anxious and was experiencing a really tough comedown, similar to the fast intense comedown after using MDPV.

8.00 My friends and I downloaded a movie to get my thoughts somewhere else, and it was working out pretty well, but when the movie was over I still was very anxious and in a very uncomfortable state.

10.30 I was hitting the sack and could sleep without any medical aid whatsoever. Normally after a night out on speed, I need about 22.5 mg of zopiclone to sleep through the night.

The following day I was tired, but other than that I felt quite alright. No hang-over in the days that followed either.

CONCLUSION: Overdosing caffeine is much more pleasant than speed on bupropion. I came down fast and hard: within a couple of hours, and I was completely sober six hours later. This experience convinced me not to use any fast-acting dopaminergic compounds ever again as I will most likely medicate with bupropion my whole life. This seems like an acceptable trade of. Lucky me that LSD still works like a charm. ;)
