Unfortunately for me China is seriously anti-painkiller and my doctor was in Singapore for a conference. Her assistant was only allowed to write a scrip for narcotics if I checked into the hospital but Tramadol was listed one class lower and she could give me that.
I had taken a percocet earlier in the day and I believe that my initial 'higher than a kite' reaction may have been drug interaction. Basically I crawled into bed and happily stared at the wall for a couple few hours.
The next day I chose to take half the prescribed dose and boost up with another 25mg dose as necessary. This did a reasonable job of controlling pain and if there were any particular symptoms of being high I didn't notice them much as it was my one morning a week helping out at a kindergarten.
When my doctor came back I switched to a codeine prescription which I initially did not like as much as the tramadol but after switching back and switching back again I decided that sustained release codeine allowed for more functionality and less high.
High is for being high.
Painkiller is for killing pain.
A 50mg dose the morning of a cross country flight had no noticeable effects (except perhaps my being less grumpy than I ought to have been for an early morning flight) but a 25mg dose 12 hours later had me crawling into bed in my hotel room and happily staring at the wall.
That evening my dinner companion's high level of conversation let me know that I was high but I don't think I would have noticed if I hadn't been trying so hard to keep up with his quick wit.
I went without painkiller the next morning and managed until a full 20 hours after my last 25mg dose before the pain got to be too annoying. Furthermore, since my companion was going to leave me alone to watch movies I figured it wouldn't interfere with anything.
- I tried to kick the free standing punching bag in his living room and missed.
- I missed and spun around until I fell down on the floor.
- My vision filled with sparkles and stars like I got during elevation sickness related oxygen deprivation.
- I had difficulty controlling my giggling (again similar to the symptoms experienced with oxygen deprivation).
- Shortly after this my companion left and I went into the bedroom intending to turn the tv on and watch movies. By my cellphone it took four hours of 'happily staring at the wall' before I got up the motivation to move.
Later on I would deliberately take some higher doses (up to 400mg) trying to gauge the high.
My experience was that if I kept my brain 'on' and thought about things the rush never really came and the painkiller function was stronger but that I was still higher than preferred when taken as a painkiller. However, if I let myself drift then I would drift far and free with very mild visuals.
