I take phenergan for nausea related to acid reflux. (yes, that's the symptom I get, not heartburn). My nausea usually began in the morning, apparently as a result of laying down all night. At first, it (phenergan) was great. Quite pleasant, in fact. I would take it on awakening, feeling nausea, and it would quell the nausea and make me a bit snoozy and, well, just pleasant. Then I could start my day feeling pretty good. However, after several days the downside kicked in. Restless leg syndrome at night. People make fun of it, but I can tell you that restless leg syndrome is a nightmare. I CANNOT sleep. I pretty much can't even stay in bed. It came on around midnight and kept up until around 6am. Spent a lot of nights online looking up RLS and what to do about it. It took a bit to figure out it was the phenergan. The Dr. agreed and prescribed compazine instead for the nausea, but I can't say that it is nearly as effective. It's tempting to take the phenergan for the sleepy/pleasant feeling, but it's just not worth it in the long run. So, I kind of go back and forth between them, as the Dr. allows, trying to get rid of the nausea, yet trying to avoid the RLS.

fyi: another thing that can bring on RLS is coming down off poppy tea. I feel great while I'm having it, but if I sip it too many days, when I stop, after several days I start to withdraw and I can't sleep, I can get RLS, can be really sick to my stomach, and then there's the diahrea when the intestines kick in again. I don't know why some other people get RLS, and I've never heard anyone admit that mild opiate use withdrawal might be a cause, but, really, who's going to tell their Dr. that?

Codeine and Oxycontin are the same story. It's all about shutting my system down for a while (the pleasant part), then having my system kick back in (the icky part).

I have noted a distinct cause and effect over more than 4 yrs. of off and on occasional usage of the above substances for myself, just trying to feel decent.

Of course, then the temptation is to keep taking whichever substance to put off the downside, then you're really in trouble.
