I had always heard hype about absinthe as being distinct from regular alcoholic beverages in that is also induced more psychoactive experiences such as visual hallucinations. One person told me they saw the moon popping in and out of the sky after drinking absinthe and smoking cannabis sativa. Given this pre-existing belief, I bought myself a bottle of absinthe from France (I was in Europe at the time).

First impression was that it was 180 proof but didn’t burn. Maybe the bottle was wrong but it burned like everclear in my mouth. First night I drank it along with some beer, Irish cream, and whiskey. I got a good buzz, the same brought on by other alcohols but a little more lucid. The next morning I had a hangover but the characteristics of that hangover were more akin to a cannabis ‘hangover’ than a drinking hangover. This experience persisted in similar conditions for two more successive nights.

I was a little disappointed by now, but the fourth night was where the Absinthe got me. This night I drank only absinthe, about 200mL on ice. About an hour later, I started noticing a building feeling of paranoia, another twenty minutes and I was afraid to open any doors where I was staying out of fear that something on the other side would attack me. Then I started seeing things moving out of the corner of my eye, like little creatures scurrying away or a fly buzzing around. I decided to go to bed at this point. In bed I stared at a window for about an hour, fearing that if I turned away for just a second when I turned back aliens would be standing at the window waiting to nab me or something. I finally got my eyes closed, and noticed some faint geodesic multi colored patterns, again akin to such patterns brought on by heavy doses of high quality cannabis indica. (or very, very, very heavy doses of lower quality cannabis sativa).

Needless to say, now when I look at famous artwork depicting the psychoactive effects of absinthe it makes sense why it all looks like ghosts climbing out of people or something to that effect. It was still a pretty positive experience though; it can be fun to be paranoid given the proper mental set.
