History: Varied experimental use of various drugs, including cocaine, heroin, marijuana, prescription opiates, LSD, mushrooms, peyote, and salvia. Used mushrooms a handful of times, LSD about 100 times, marijuana semi-frequently over a period of years, and opiates daily for the past 3 years. For the past 18 months, I have been taking an average of 40 mg methadone daily, so my opiate receptors are subject to the partial agonist-partial antagonist effect of the methadone. I still get a kick out of the opiates, though, and I probably always will. So yes, I am experienced, and yes, I have a successful career and a happy and fulfilling family life.

Anyway, I heard about this stuff called kratom, so I did a little research. As soon as I saw the word “opiate,” I was sold. I purchased about half an ounce of Mitragyna speciosa extract from a reputable source; my rule of thumb is that higher potency is always better (except maybe with salvia).

The very first time, I packed 0.34 grams into a “00” gelatin capsule and swallowed it after a light meal. The effects were very slight, but pleasant, sort of like hinting at some hydrocodone diluted within the bloodstream. The next time, a few days later, I decided to try it in some tea. I measured out 0.66 grams, added it to a cup of herbal tea, and drank it. The taste was surprisingly pleasant: just like tea. It was not difficult to drink at all; in fact, it was rather tasty with some honey. Shortly thereafter, I had to run some unexpected errands, so I did not get to focus on the effects as much as I would have liked, but it did not impair my driving at all. For nearly double the dose, though, it didn’t feel that much stronger than the first time. Pleasant, yes, but nothing to get overly excited about. To my experienced opiate receptors it would be comparable to about 10 mg of hydrocodone (a very low dose for me).

So for this latest attempt, I decided to go back to the capsules, which I decided was a more efficient use of the extract. I packed four “00” gelatin capsules for a total of 2 grams kratom extract. I swallowed two of them on an [almost] empty stomach (plus a handful of chips and a glass of water). An hour later, I took the other two. About an hour and a half after I had taken the first two pills, I began to feel the effects. It was very soft and mild. I felt relaxed and mildly euphoric, and I had that lovely sense of control, like I am possessing something precious, that keeps me coming back for more. I had a full day of studying for a big test ahead of me, but nothing much else to do, so I let the kratom fill me as I delved into the subject matter for the upcoming exam. Probably the best thing about it was that it made me actually want to do the work.

I was really focused and into it. After a while I did start to feel slightly drowsy, but was not in danger of falling asleep. Plus, the added depth of the colors on my computer screen kept me interested. I can only describe it as that visual effect I get when a hallucinogen is starting to take effect, and things have a super-3D appearance, but they haven’t started really animating yet. That’s kind of the effect that the kratom had, and my mind stayed in that gear very enjoyably for several hours. I made a lot of good progress on my study material, and it was very complicated stuff (for a postgraduate doctoral program).

After several hours I began to feel very hungry, as I had not eaten much yet. I prepared myself a small bowl of food, but was barely able to finish it. The kratom made it very difficult to eat. It was as if there just wasn’t room in my stomach for very much food at all. I finished my small bowl, though, not wanting to waste anything, but I probably shouldn’t have, because I began to feel slightly nauseated after that. That was the worst part of the experience. So I just sat very still and upright, continuing with my studies, and the feeling gradually began to subside. After a little while, I went to the bathroom and had a successful bowel movement; I felt much better after that. To calm my stomach, I ate a few slices of apple, and was back to feeling fine.

The effects persisted at a slight level for the rest of the night, which turned out to be very late. Towards the end of the night, I even got my appetite back. Compared to a strong narcotic dose, which in my opinion is the most fun thing in the world, the kratom is very mild and sedately euphoric; motivating if not energizing. Even at the peak of having maybe a little too much, whereas a narcotic would make me hot and sweaty, fast-pulsed and faint-headed, the kratom was nowhere near that. I still felt like smiling throughout the experience. Overall, I would categorize kratom as a very good opiate substitute, very enjoyable.
