Since coming to university in the fall, I have been thrust into a world where any and all drugs are norm on any given night. There are various dealers of everything from cheap tobacco to weed to MDMA, although my friend and I realised there was a gap in the market for selling laughing gas at parties. Everybody wanted it, but nobody had it - so we decided to invest in it ourselves.

At the time of the first experience, I had been a to a few parties and sold a far few hundred balloons, but still resisted the urge because 'it would eat into my profits' - how foolish I was not to realise that it was really only costing me a fraction of the price I was selling it for. Anyway, so I was selling a lot of balloons at a party on the last night before Easter break. My friend, H, who had let me know about this party was insistent that I try it at some point that night, although I still wasn't sure.

He told me to come upstairs, as there was a roomful of people who would surely buy many balloons off me. As soon as I entered the room, I felt the loving presence of these strangers I had never met, although the combination of drugs they were on, and the fact that I would be one providing them with more, had something to do with it, but I just knew that it was time.

After filling up balloons for the rest of the room, I announced that I was going to try my first one. After hearing about what it would do to me, I thought I knew what I was in for, how wrong I was! I knew what I was meant to do with the balloon, and immediately started breathing in and out - staring at the balloon growing and shrinking like a lung as I began. The sweet taste did not put me off at all, and I rather enjoyed it. After three breaths I began to feel a slight head rush come on, as if I had stood up very quickly. I decided it would be a good idea to take in the rest of the balloon and hold my breath for as long as I could. I would say that I took about 7 breaths in total.

As soon as I dropped the balloon to the ground, I slid down the wall, though not quite touching the floor. I felt a rush of sound come past my head from behind, and I felt as though the sound of rest of the group still doing their balloons was coming from inside my head. I tried to speak but only a low moan came out, as I looked up at my friend H, whose lips had turned blue and his eyes glazed over. I felt an intense rush of energy, and pushed my hands up my thighs towards my knees as a way of focussing this energy on one particular point. At this time I felt as though the rush had already peaked and was slightly disappointed at the lack of laughter I was experiencing. As I stood up again to grab my cracker and sell more balloons, the feeling of the weight of the body on my feet seemed hilarious, and I began to howl with laughter and an inane grin on my face as I looked around the room. Damn, I wanted another one already. Luckily, with the amount of people that I had to sell to as well, I didn't have another chance to take a ballon (with H of course) until half an hour later. I think that if I had the chance to take another balloon as soon as possible, it would may well lead to a slipperly slope of lost profits.

I would have to say it was a very interesting experience, and one that I have been inclined to indulge in in certain situations - although having seen people inhale balloon after balloon at parties, I know it could be easy to be addicted very quickly, although I would say that the addiction would only last as long as someone could keep getting their hands on it.
