Two Sides of the Same Coin
5-MeO-MiPT & MDMA

This comparison and contrast between MDMA and 5-MeO-MiPT is based solely on my observations and experiences with both of these compounds. One should remember that every person reacts differently.

These two compounds are almost like two sides of the same coin. One is a tryptamine (5-MeO-MiPT), and the other a phenethylamine (MDMA). I once read that 5-MeO-MiPT regarded as the 'Tryptamine's Answer to MDMA,' and while I feel that is somewhat accurate, there are some significant differences between the two, even though both are empathogenic.

Mentally, I found that MDMA is very clear-headed, whereas the 5-MeO-MiPT goes in waves between tripping hard and being clear-headed. They are both very empathogenic (meaning they render feelings of empathy), and both are rather euphoric. That is, it was rather hard to have a bad time on either one, but the chance of such an event occurring is slightly more with 5-MeO-MiPT - I could still find myself in a weird headspace occasionally.

With 5-MeO-MiPT, I found that the onset was very close to the onset of MDMA. It takes about 30 minutes before I began to feel the effects, and about 60 to 90 minutes past the initial dose for it to fully kick in. Once at the peak, I found that it lasted about the same amount of time that MDMA does: 2-4 hours. However, unlike MDMA, there is no surge or rush of energy, and it didn't necessarily make me a chatterbox, but the tryptamine-like feelings came in strong waves.

With MDMA, I found that it wasn't nearly as tactile or as much of an aphrodisiac as 5-MeO-MiPT. It is often reported that orgasm is difficult to achieve while under MDMA's influence, and sometimes even into the next day after the effects had worn off. With 5-MeO-MiPT, in some cases it can induce orgasms even without physical stimulation, and it is highly effective at inducing a state of arousal. This is probably one of the biggest differences between the two.

Visually, they are about the same; however, 5-MeO-MiPT is minorly more visual than MDMA. There really isn't much that goes on visually with MDMA at all, but with 5-MeO-MiPT, I found that there is a very minor, shroom-like visual that came along with it. Patterning was barely noticeable, but colors and lights brighten and appear more vibrant. That is about the extent of the visuals I got from 5-MeO-MiPT. With MDMA, it was much of the same case, but there wasn't any patterning, and very minor tracers; colors were a bit more vibrant, and lights had halos around them.

Auditorially, MDMA has 5-MeO-MiPT beat, hands down. While with 5-MeO-MiPT, I was able to pick out more sounds in a song (due to its trippy feel); it didn't really do the same thing as what MDMA did. With MDMA, I could listen to the song, I could feel the song, and I could experience the song.
With MDMA, I could listen to the song, I could feel the song, and I could experience the song.
I would want to dance to every song I listened to. With 5-MeO-MiPT, songs sounded a bit deeper, and there were more elements to them, but they still sounded relatively normal. They weren't nearly as exciting to jump into and experience; rather, I would sit there and listen to them.

The feeling the compounds instilled in me were as similar as they were different. The biggest similarity between the two is that both are empathogens; they instilled in me feelings of empathy and allowed me to open up more easily. MDMA has a classic, open, 'life is beautiful' feeling to it and nothing can really upset me, whereas 5-MeO-MiPT feels like a lovechild between shrooms and MDMA, and I could still feel somewhat humble and vulnerable. While MDMA made me want to get up and dance and talk, 5-MeO-MiPT made me want to lie down and cuddle.
While MDMA made me want to get up and dance and talk, 5-MeO-MiPT made me want to lie down and cuddle.
Tryptamines, in general, make me want to lie down. That is probably another key difference between the two: the energy, the backbone feeling, and where I want to spend my energy.

On the subject of their potential benefits for psychotherapy, 5-MeO-MiPT has some potential, but nowhere near the extent of MDMA. MDMA's potential and reputation has been long-established. At a party, when I was on MDMA, I saw a girl that I once liked making out with a dude I didn't know...and I didn't care. At all. Normally, I knew I would have felt jealousy, but my exact mental thought process was 'It's her life. Whatever.' And I kept dancing. With MDMA, I could forgive, forget, and just simply not care. With 5-MeO-MiPT, it's a bit more introspective, and it's a bit more analytical, but it doesn't have the same 'life is good' feeling that MDMA has. It just doesn't do it quite like MDMA does. Though 5-MeO-MiPT does have some promise, it doesn't have the magic.

Socially speaking, the settings in which they may be used are very different. MDMA has a long reputation for dance parties, raves, music festivals, and psychotherapy sessions. 5-MeO-MiPT doesn't have as much of a reputation, and is still relatively obscure. In a social setting, I would say a relaxed situation would be its calling: an evening with friends, a private party, a hookah lounge, a night out on the town, a day in the park, or at a music festival. It is good for raves, but not great for them.

Lastly, and most importantly, I must discuss the health issues associated with both:

5-MeO-MiPT has a much smaller, and more temperamental dosage range than MDMA's. With the average dosage being between 5-10 milligrams (Shulgin slightly underestimated I think when he said 4-6), it's incredibly potent, and the potential for overdose is very present. I've read that people have been hospitalized at 20mg, having difficult experiences past 15mg. However, 5-MeO-MiPT doesn't have the neurotoxicity or mental and physical crashes associated with MDMA; the comedown for it is very gentle and smooth. Body temperature remains fairly stable. There was no jaw clenching, or headache that comes from the usage of this compound.

With MDMA, hyperthermia is a risk, as well as over-hydration (lack of salinity in the blood), headaches can occur, and jaw clenching is also common. Moreover, the emotional crash associated with MDMA does occur, and it is more severe with higher doses - to prevent this, take 5-HTP and orange juice, and keep your vitamins up. MDMA's recommended dosage range is between 100-300mg, though people with a tolerance have taken up to a gram before and been okay.

Overall, they are two delightful compounds, each with its own personality. It seems as though their similarities mostly end with the euphoric and empathogenic properties, however. With 5-MeO-MiPT, it would seem that it is a molly-like feeling and introduction to classical psychedelia, without being too pushy or overboard - it occasionally felt like the trips I would get from 4-AcO-DMT, DMT, or shrooms. In that regard, I would best describe it as 'chill' or 'mellow.'

On the other hand, with MDMA, I find it somewhat difficult to describe accurately. There really haven't been many phenethylamine compounds I have tried that invoke a state similar to it. It shares properties with amphetamines because it is one (jaw clenching, anorexia, possible nausea); it has all the stimulation one would get from amphetamines, but it offers MUCH more than that. The empathy, understanding, acceptance that I gained from it allowed me to look at just about anything in a positive light.

They are two vastly different sides of the same coin.
