Erowid Announcement #29
June 27, 2002
Greetings Entheophiles,
Hope everyone's summer is going well. As usual things are busy but running smoothly. for us. Lots of projects are in the works in addition to the usual day to day site additions and management.
In the last two months, Earth and I have spoken at two conferences, one in Los Angeles and one in Bethesda, MD. The Bethesda meeting was a technical conference on "Youth, Drugs, and the Internet", sponsored by NIDA (the National Institute on Drug Abuse). We discussed what the Erowid project is and why we do the work we do. We were surprisingly well received, and we're cautiously hopeful that some of our suggestions for future NIDA research might have a positive impact on their decision making.
Development of Erowid 3.0 (the third incarnation of the site's architecture) is slowly progressing. We're working to consolidate disparate parts of the site so that searching and navigation can be more streamlined, easy to use, and efficient.
As a special note, donations have been a bit low for the past two months. If anyone's been meaning to join or make a donation...now's the time. We could really use the help. We're also looking for those people who can make a monthly pledge, whether $5 or $100/mo (or anywhere in between), it helps us to have even a small steady stream throughout the year. If you think you can help, visit: Erowid.org/donations/.
We welcome submissions, suggestions, criticisms, or corrections at submissions@erowid.org.
peace,
Fire & Earth

- Visitor Surveys
Survey 1 -- Survey 2 -- Survey 3
During three 24-hour periods between May 30 and June 4 we included a series of survey questions at the top of most pages on the site. Approximately 10% of all visitors to Erowid during that period responded.
- Bits & Pieces
Example: 4-methylaminorex Bits & Pieces
A new category of data has been added to the site. The "Bits & Pieces" sections are intended for random snippets of information which don't easily fit elsewhere and/or which have been newly added, but not yet carefully categorized. So far we have added Bits & Pieces to seven vaults.
- Datura Identification Key
Erowid.org/plants/datura/datura_key/datura_key1.shtml
A great key which walks you through the process of identifying the various datura species. Erowid is working with Dr. Richard Sanders, the original author of the key, to update and expand the reference to include Brugmansia species as well.
- Drug Use Statistics Charts
Erowid.org/psychoactives/statistics/statistics_drug_use.shtml
We created charts based on the data from SAMHSA's 2001 Monitoring the Future Survey, which looks at drug use patterns of high school students. The charts currently displayed are Alcohol, Amphetamines, Cannabis, Cocaine, Heroin, Inhalants, LSD, MDMA, Methamphetamine, PCP, Tobacco, Barbiturates, Flunitrazepam, and Steroids.

Erowid.org/tech/devices_article1.shtml
"One of the newest avenues of research into the mind-body relationship has nothing to do with religious ritual, ethnobotany, or tinkering with brain chemistry. It's about altering the way the brain behaves on the most basic level -- the electrical impulses that constantly stream from neuron to neuron." by Grant Balfour.
- CYP-2D6 and MDMA Metabolism Overview
Erowid.org/chemicals/mdma/mdma_pharmacology1.shtml
We formerly reported that differences in genetic variation in the liver enzyme CYP-2D6 could affect the health of MDMA users. We have changed our opinion on this and have created an overview page describing our current understanding (with references).
