Creators of The San Francisco Oracle threw a big party for thousands of hippies on the date that LSD was first made illegal in California, inviting Ken Kesey & The Merry Pranksters, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, and others. Retrospectively considered to have been a "warm up" event for the Human Be-In that happened on January 14, 1967.

Held in in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA. Produced by Michael Bowen and Allen Cohen. Creators of The San Francisco Oracle threw an even bigger party for 20,000+ hippies, inviting Timothy Leary (who made his first public appearance in San Francisco), Richard Alpert (Ram Dass), Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jerry Rubin, and others, including Owsley Stanley, who provided his newly illicit LSD for those in attendance. The Hells Angels worked as event security, while music was performed by Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead.

The event and date were announced in the San Francisco Oracle as "A Gathering of the Tribes for a Human Be-In". It was probably partially a rebellion against the recent California law banning LSD use by the general public.

Some reports state that hundreds of people experienced extreme trips lasting up to three days with many ending up in the hospital. Some estimates are that 5,000 or more doses were distributed, but Erowid believes the number of doses distributed up to and through June is less than one thousand, based on notes from Tim Scully who discussed this with "Bear" Owsley Stanley, the number was much lower than some reports. The BNDD Microgram Bulletin from November 1967 states "In early June, allegedly several thousand 'STP' tablets were distributed free at a "LOVE IN" in the San Francisco area. However, the contemporaneous reports from the FDA do not support the "several thousand" number which was published in November, six months after the events in question.

Considered one of several watershed events in the counter cultural history of the time, this massive event in Connecticut drew people from all over the country. Officials attempted to stop it and most of the scheduled music bands failed to make it into the event. Psychedelics and cannabis were widely available.

Conference Marks Change In Pot Status

WASHINGTON -- The first "People's Pot Conference" marked a notable change in the status of the cannabis weed and of its devotees in this country.

Keith Stroup, the director of NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, which organized the conference, said that the number of arrests for marijuana offenses has been slowing down on a national scale.

He estimated that more than 10.000 persons were still in jail for various kinds of marijuana offenses--exact statistics are lacking--"but I think that in most places, except rural areas, police have come to the conclusion that it is best to go after heroin and the other hard drugs, and not to worry very much about marijuana."

Although penalties on the books remain heavy, notably in Texas, where a person can be sent to life imprisonment for selling a marijuana "joint" to a minor, he said, some states and local authorities have begun to reduce them.

At Ann Arbor, Mich., possession of marijuana is now officially classed as a misdemeanor punishable with a $5 fine. Delegates from Ann Arbor said the police rarely bother them.

Stroup said he thought the report of the President's Marijuana Commission early this summer would be regarded historically as the turning point, but that the change would probably have taken place anyway.

The commission's report, which was rejected by President Nixon, did not find much evidence that marijuana was harmful, except to juveniles and to those already inclined to be psychotic. It recommended "decriminalization" of marijuana--that is, lifting penalties that make it a felony to smoke or
possess it.

<< At CTII I saw perhaps the most amusing demonstration of stand-up shamanism possible. Arguably the world's leading expert in the legal-high Phalaris grass was there with a truck load of the stuff. After teaching everyone how to grow wild 'Turkey [red]' in a tub on the roof being sure to mow it regularly, he proceeded to brew up a batch of DMT for 80. But there was no chemical nor alchemical gear. This guy is a down-home farmer from Montana. He had a huge metal barrel and industrial burner, a bag of lemons and a pitchfork. It was surreal--like a scene somewhere between Casteneda and Cheech and Chong--when he started making lemonade, boiling it, and chucking in what looked like lawn clippings. He was the perfect embodiment of the Trickster, as his jokes flew as fast as his pitchfork. >>

Planned to be held at Hedonism III in Jamaica, producer Alex Pearlstein executed an eleventh-hour pull-out, when misleadingly hyped ticket sales for the event didn't pan out. While Pearlstein himself did not show up in Jamaica, those attendees who were unaware of the cancellation or who could not obtain any reimbursement for flights or paid attendance fees, went anyway, despite none of the presenters, music, or other entertainment that was promised being delivered.

This Shamanism Conference allowed people from all over the world to meet in the Peruvian Amazon, meet different types of curanderos (shamans) and learn more about how Shamanism is practiced and plants revered there.There were also many Shamans from the Upper Amazon and they too were speaking of their healing modalities, including the ceremonial and healing use of the Sacred Power Plant: Ayahuasca.

There were three full days of programming with concurrent tracks exploring clinical and spiritual applications, issues relevant to healthcare professionals, and social and cultural issues surrounding the therapeutic and recreational uses of psychedelics.

Held at the BioPharmaceutical Technology Center, Madison, WI. This conference was designed to explore the Mind-Brain phenomenon and how this relates to human consciousness. This Bioethics Forum covered a wide range of topics including: ethnobotany and indigenous cultures, sleep, dream and wakefulness states, near death experiences, neurotransmitters, and recent clinical studies of the therapeutic effects of entheogens. Held at UvA, Oude Manhuispoort 4-6, in Amsterdam, Holland. This symposium was a multidisciplinary series of lectures that focused on current research being done in Europe. Experts from different disciplines presented their studies on ayahuasca’s effects on health, neural functioning and consciousness. Some of the speakers were Brian Anderson, Wouter J. Hanegraaff, Rama Leclerc, Janine Schmidt, Christian Raetsch, Claudia Mueller-Ebeling, and Diana Trimble.

Held in Vancouver Canada. This conference included some of the most knowledgeable and practiced hearts and minds related to plant medicines. Indigenous Leaders, Ethnobotanists, Shamans and Medical Researchers in the field of psychedelics from around the globe met to speak, hold forums, panels and share their wisdom. Some of the topics were how medicines relate to healing, drug policy, globalization, and what sacred use of the plant teachers look like. Some of the presenters were Kathleen Harrison, Dennis McKenna, Jonathan Dickinson, Stephen Gray, and Jeremy Narby.

Held at the UC Berkeley campus bookstore in Berkeley, CA, folks gathered to socialize and have their copies of The Shulgin Index--the recently released chemistry book focused on psychedelic phenethylamines written by Sasha Shulgin, Tania Manning, and Paul Daley--signed by the authors.

This fifth annual WVC presented the work of visionary women healers, scholars, activists, and artists who study consciousness and altered states. Held in Victoria, BC, Canada, Vancouver, BC, Canada, and Portland, OR. This was a tour of benefit events to raise funds for psychedelic and medical marijuana research.

Held at the Oxford House in London, England, and hosted by Open Democracy, Know Drugs and The Exile Nation Project, this conference on drug and criminal justice policy featured some of the US & UK’s most active policy analysts, activists, film-makers, and academics, for an exploration of what a post-prohibition society could look like, and how we might get there in our lifetime. Presenters included Amanda Feilding, Julie Holland, Ethan Nadelmann, Charles Shaw, Mat Southwell, Team Shulgin (Sasha & Ann Shulgin, Paul Daley, Tania Manning), and others.

Held in Barcelona, Spain. Theoretical-practical workshop aimed at training specialists in the use of expanded states of consciousness (ECE) applied to human development, psychotherapy and knowledge generation.

Held in the Great Sophia classroom at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, CA, Jim Fadiman, "America's wisest and most respected authority on psychedelics and their use," reviewed the value of psychedelics for healing and self-discovery as well as how LSD has facilitated scientific and technical problem-solving. This event allowed the audience to hear Fadiman speak, ask him questions, and have their book signed.

Held in at Studio Pali Fekete Architects Gallery in Culver City, CA, this exhibit featured stunning portraits of counter-cultural figures by photographer Marc Franklin.

Held at Cell Space, San Francisco, CA. DIRTY PICTURES is a documentary about Dr. Alexander “Sasha” Shulgin, the rogue chemist who discovered the effects of MDMA (aka Ecstasy) and over 200 other mind-altering drugs. Shulgin’s alchemy has earned him the title “The Godfather of Psychedelics,” and a reputation as one of the great chemists of the 20th century.

Held at the Judson Memorial Church, New York City, NY and hosted by Judson Memorial Church, this annual conference is a forum for learning about psychedelic drugs in New York City. Its goal is to open a fresh dialogue on their role in medicine, culture, history, spirituality, and creativity.

Held in Los Angeles, CA, and sponsored by the Drug Policy Alliance. The Reform Conference featured over 1,000 attendees from more than thirty nations and dozens of activist organizations to discuss their own struggles and achievements in ending the War on Drugs, and to discover new ways to work together and support each other’s efforts. Attracting national figures like former New Mexico Governor (and current Republican presidential candidate) Gary Johnson, California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, PBS travel host Rick Steves, and even a Skype appearance by Virgin CEO Richard Branson, the 2011 International Drug Policy Reform Conference in Los Angeles brought together leaders of the global ant-Drug War movement for a bi-annual meeting of the minds held amid an air of uncertainty regarding the federal government’s renewed attempts to “crack down” on medical marijuana.

Held in rural Victoria, Australia. EGA hosts this annual conference consisting of lectures, workshops, discussion panels, cinema, performance and art. The event hosts an array of speakers from across Australia and abroad, and aims to address the issues relating to drug use from social, cultural and traditional perspectives. The EGA-11 program will draw on the backgrounds of therapy, biology, pharmacology, psychology, neuroscience, anthropology, botany, visionary art, culture, politics, law and more, to provide a realistic context of the role drugs and altered states play in the modern world.

Held at the Oakland Marriott City Center, Oakland, CA. MAPS celebrated 25 years of psychedelic and medical marijuana research and education with five days of education and entertainment in downtown Oakland.

Held at the Clarion Congress Hotel in Prague, Czech Republic and hosted by SANANIM, UTRIP, and the Centre for Public Health, Liverpool John Moores University. This events aim was to bring together experts from a wide range of fields to exchange information on the latest research, policy and practice on protecting and promoting health in nightlife settings. Issues included alcohol and drug use; sexual health; violence and anti-social behaviour; management and design of nightlife settings; late night transport; staff training; and international nightlife tourism.

Visionary Artist Fred Tomaselli spoke on January 12th about his work at the U.C. Davis Technocultural Studies Building, in conjunction with the exhibit "Three Painters/Three Flavors: A Local Celebration of Art and Community" at the Nelson Gallery in Davis, where Tomaselli was showing with artists Leslie Shows and Peter Edlund, which ran from the 12th through March 18th. Held at Nature Friends in Sierra Madre, CA, this one-day seminar led by Bruce Damer and Lorenzo Hagerty celebrated the life and ideas of Terence McKenna, and suggested possible next steps beyond 2012. The event also featured a hammer dulcimer and vocal performance by Constance Demby.

Held at the EarthRise Retreat Center at the Institute of Noetic Science in Petaluma, CA, this dinner featured a spontaneous, creative conversation between Kat Harrison and Ralph Metzner about their field of study, what is currently of greatest interest to them (and why), and what has fascinated them over the years.

Held at Chelsea Studios/Theatreworks in New York, NY, this event featured four workshops and a panel discussion with Rick Doblin, Alex Grey, Allyson Grey, Julie Holland, and Neal M. Goldsmith, on the research, methods, and tools necessary to develop enhanced consciousness in individuals and in society as a whole.

Held in Vancouver, Canada, and produced by the American Educational Research Association, the paper "The Wonder of Plant Teachers: Entheogens as Cognitive Tools" was presented during a session titled "Dwelling and the More-Than-Human in Education".

ABSTRACT: The traditional ritual uses of entheogens--psychoactive plants and fungi, such as peyote, ayahuasca, and psilocybin-containing mushrooms--have been an important part of some indigenous cultures. Yet modern political, religious and educational authorities have cast these as diabolical savage practices or archaic magical customs incompatible with Western values and epistemologies. This paper suggests that indigenous peoples may not have been misguided in revering entheogenic substances as "plant teachers", but rather that the circumspect uses of entheogens as primordial cognitive tools may offer valuable forms of learning for the early 21st century. It deploys some current educational theories and critiques of modern schooling to account for the concept of psychoactive "plant teachers" and the phenomenal wonders they can inspire.

Held at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA, this was the second in a series of three that celebrated the life and ideas of Terence McKenna, helping to exorcise his ghost and move beyond problematic 2012 end-time predictions. Convened by Bruce Damer and Lorenzo Hagerty, this event also premiered Ken Adams' film The Terence McKenna Experience, which features early film footage of Terence set to psychedelic animations and music.

Held at the Oakland Marriott City Center in Oakland, California, the second conference sponsored by the Beckley Foundation, the Council on Spiritual Practices, the Heffter Research Institute, and the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, drew nearly 2,000 attendees to. Over a hundred of the world's leading researchers presented recent findings on the benefits and risks of LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, ayahuasca, ibogaine, 2C-B, ketamine, marijuana, and more, over three days of conference presentations, and two days of pre- and post-conference workshops.
