Dimenhydrinate Health
by Erowid

CONTRAINDICATIONS:
  • Avoid taking dimenhydrinate (dramamine) if you are currently taking an MAOI, most commonly found in prescription anti-depressants Nardil (phenelzine), Parnate (tranylcypromine), Marplan (isocarboxazid), Eldepryl (l-deprenyl), Aurorex or Manerix (moclobemide), or in Ayahuasca mixtures which contain harmine or harmaline.

  • Dimenhydrinate has anticholinergic properties and should not be used by those with glaucoma (raised pressure in the eye), prostatic hypertrophy (enlargement of prostrate gland), or urinary obstructions.

  • The anticholinergic effects of atropine and tricyclic antidepressants may be enhanced by dimenhydrinate.

  • Avoid mixing dimenhydrinate with central nervous system depressants such as alcohol, barbiturates, hypnotics, narcotic analgesics, sedatives, and tranqullisers. It may enhance the sedative effect of these substances.

  • Do not take this product, unless directed by a doctor, if you have a breathing problem such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

WARNINGS:
  • Dimenhydrinate may precipitate seizures in those with epilepsy or who have low seizure thresholds.

  • Stop taking dimenhydrinate and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives).

  • The safety of this product for pregnant women has not been determined.
