Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta)
Health
NOTES #
Because methylphenidate is a long acting stimulant, the primary health concerns associated with methylphenidate use related to cardiovascular problems. When used as a recreational stimulant over prescribed doses, the risks of serious or fatal cardiovascular health problems increase.
WARNINGS #
- Erectile Function / Priapism Although methylphenidate inhibits erection in most males in most circumstances, the FDA issued a warning in December 2013 that in "rare instances" methylphenidate might result in medically dangerous priapism (prolonged and sometimes painful erections). Risk of priapism may or may not be increased by interactions with other medications. See FDA warns of rare risk of long-lasting erections in males taking methylphenidate ADHD medications and has approved label changes.
