“D-Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) - Effect on biogenic amines excretion in man.”.
Biochem Pharmacol. 1973;22(18):2352-54.
Abstract
The effect of D-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) on biogenic amine excretion was studied in man. Methods 7 Male volunteers received LSD (200-300 mcg, p.o.) and 24 hr urine collections were made for each subject on the day prior to, as well as on the day of, LSD administration. Urine samples were fractionated and quantitative determinations were made of urinary dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT), hòmovanillic acid (HVA), vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) following established analytical procedures. Results Total values are given for DA, NE and 5HT. LSD reduced significantly DA excretion in urine (ói7 to 476>mcg/24 fur). Concomit-antly a 57 0ecrease in urinary 5HT was measured (not statistically significant). Urinary excretion of NE, VMA, HVA and 5-HIAA was not affected by LSD administration. Conclusions . The heightened sympathetic activitr produced by LSD in man is not reflected in greater excretion of NE and VMA. Urinary 5HT and DA levels decreased without affecting levels of their major acid metabolites, 5-HIAA and HVA respectively. LSD administration may interfere in storage and/or release of monoamines and such altera-tions may be manifested by psychological changes.
